Hey everyone, well I sold my 91 Plus locally for $300 a couple weeks ago, but the guy never came up with the cash. Oh well I guess I will keep it. Anyways I want to get this thing up and running so I can drive it instead of putting the miles on my 09 Jetta with alot of mods. I was thinking about doing a 3.2 swap or 60K. Is there anyone around me (Goldsboro NC) that would want to assist (well pretty much show me). I would be willing to give you some cash for your troubles, and supply some beer also if you drink. If a swap would be easier I would rather do that. I am not in a rush so time isnt pressing. I will be TDY to Vegas from May 20-June 4. I have alot of leave saved up so I could take some time off if needed. I wouldnt be able to drive it to you since it needs a couple things (wheel bearing, tires, etc) Please let me know if your willing to help out. Thanks in advance. :munch:

you can email me at [email protected], since I am not on here often.

I'd love to help with a 60k, it's a shame you're so far away. There's a few other members down that way, we've got a group of great people in the region, hopefully others will speak up.

yeah I see a handful of people from our area, if noone is able to help me out then I will most likely get a 3.0 and just swap that in with my father in law who is very knowledgable in engine swaps (Chevy though). I am sure he'd help me out if I help swap an engine in his Camaro, I just figured I'd ask around here first. Thanks

Do you know of any good SHO shops in the NC area?

It would be great fun to have some assistance from an enthusiast but you should take a look at the resources available on this forum. It's absolutely the next best thing. I did my first 60K working off the photos and descriptions and it was not that difficult. And I'm not the best wrench in the drawer. Go for it.

Thanks, Im not the greatest wrench turner either (although I work on the ejection seats for F-15s in the Air Force) haha. I see all the tutorials but then I also see all the "weird noise after 60K" and "car wont start after 60K" and it scares me. Because I know how I am and I'll get frustrated and then I'll have something else broken, ha. But like I said if I do not get the help from another SHO owner then I will most likely just do a 3.0 or 3.2 swap with my father in law. It will be some great "bonding" time.

If you are going to swap something do a 3.2. As far as the 60k....you may want to do it on the engine you swap in any way. If your 3.0 is basically okay I would just do a 60k and keep it. Since its doesnt have to be your daily driver just take your time....its not bad if you have another vehicle to drive. The worst is when you have to get it back on the road for work the next day. Just my opinion

very true, the engine I have in it now has 26X,*** miles, havnt really been in the SHO since October so I do not know the exact miles, so I'd rather just do a swap than do the 60K to this engine. There is a local junk yard with a 95ATX with 88K miles, you have to pull your own engines, but it costs $150.00 for any engine you pull. So I will most likely pull that one. And yes it wont be my daily driver so I can take my time, but also I want it road worthy, so I dont keep raking up the miles in my Jetta.

There are a few places in NC that might help you get fixed up, and I don't want to speak for anyone here, but there are a few people in NC who have shop access and are very knowledgeable. Paul [nctaurussho] up in Hertford NC I'm sure would be happy to offer you his services for a good price, I haven't talked to him lately but he's done these kind of things for people in the past. Terry [nc89sho] (and his brother, Juan?) is also very knowledgeable, he's in Clemmons, and might be willing to help you out. John [johndallara] is in Chapel Hill, has no shop but has an awesome garage and is very knowledgeable if you would like someone to mentor/advise you if you decided to do it yourself.

Very good suggestions. I can also recommend University Ford in downtown Durham. I used to work there and they are one of the few dealers in the area that still have a SHO specialist(Neal) working for them. They do all the major work on my SHO for me, since my injury. I would suggest checking with the members listed above first. If they can't help you, let me know and I can get you contact info for the dealership. :salute:

That $150.00 Atx motor sounds too good to be true, I would get it before it disappears.
But, despite the miles on yours, I would do the 60K top and front on your own motor, with the help of someone on this forum.
Forget having "dad" help. If he is used to Camaros, all you are going to hear is how much harder everything is to do in these cars. And he is right, but you still don't want to hear it.
I have taken my car to a dealership for repairs, and no matter how nice and knowledgeable they are, things take a long time even for them, and it turns out to be very expensive. Their rates make sense on a $40,000.00 new SHO, but not on a 91.
Take lots of pictures of things before you start and keep a log of what you do; and put every nut, screw, whatever, back in exactly the same spot it came from. You can do the donkey work between visits from people who know what they are doing.
Everybody will be happy that way.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The salvage yard I speak of has tons of cars and always have great deals. I called to see if they would pull engines and they said all I have to do is unhook everything and they will pull it and carry it to my truck and load it. On Saturdays you pay $40 dollars and as long as you can carry it from one end of their scales to the other (about 35-40ft) you can have it for the price of admission. So if you went with someone and both of you carried the engine out you couldt get one for $80.00. I love this place, just wish they had more SHOs. They have 4 ATXs. And the engine I want is spotless, looks brand new to be honest. I just have to have a day off from my hectic schedule to make it back up and pull it. They also have a pretty much intact Festiva...but I already have my hands full, cant handle another project.

For $150 I would grab the 3.2. Put it on an engine stand and do your 60k on it while you swap over the 3.0 accesories and heads. Then drop the 3.2 in your car. Doing a 60k on an engine on a stand would be awsome....no having to work around thing ect.

yup, thats what I was going to do. My father in law has and engine stand. I will look at the tutorials for the 60K. I will most likely get a 3.2 and swap my 3.0 stuff over and do the 60K. thanks, but like I said once I start, if someone wants to get their hands dirty feel free to let me know if you want to help.

shonutperformance.com has a great 60K video....there a also some online step by steps. As far as swaping in the 3.2, there are alot of write ups on it. Basically you take the 3.2 block, pistons, rods and crank....then swap everything from the 3.0 over to it. Have fun

Yup, I have that video tape in my trunk for the 60K. I Havnt gotten around to watch it since I do not have a VCR. I cannot wait to do this swap. I think I may get that 3.2 once I get back from Vegas June 4. Then put it on an engine stand and get to work. Its going to be fun.
