Please, Please, Please let your car shift itself. If you have shift points and the firmness set nice it doesn't make sense to do the shifting yourself.

My car shifts hard and shifts to 2nd at 7100rpm and shifts into 3rd at 7000rpm. That 3rd gear shift was bumped up 600 rpm. Nearly 5 mph. A huge difference all the shifting changes has done. Coupled with 3.0 cams it feels good right to 7000rpm.

If I let the car shift itself from 2nd to 3rd it will shift @ 6200RPM. You're saying that's better than 7000??

What I'm saying is get the shift points changed. 6200rpm is low. If you really wanted to you could shift manually but it's not really gonna change much. Just my advise.

Also, you said above that you had increased shift points to 7500rpm. It sounds like your car is shifting at stock points and that that tuner is really doing it's job. Are the shifts more firm than stock?

The Superchips tuner is a pre-programmed tuner and cannot be modified.
The 1-2 shift occurs about 7200RPM (I originally said 7500RPM but I later looked more closely and corrected that) but the 2-3 shift is around 6200RPM (I have no idea why they programmed it that way)

My stock shifts occurred at about 7000RPM for the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift seems to be about the same. Yes the shifts are MUCH firmer than stock however. So I know it's working and it's helping, I'm just not sure that 2-3 shift is where I want it to be to race with. We all know the 3rd gear on the ATX is kind of a bogger, so I figured it would be better to pull that 2-3 shift up higher to around 7000RPM before I let her shift. Would you agree or no?

Thanks for everyone's input

The date for the race is Saturday May 15th. Sorry, you will have to wait until then.

As for the tires... don't knock the Cooper CS4's until you actually check them out. They may not be designed for track racing around hairpin turns but they are a very nice tire. Great traction, ride quality, quiet. :)

Compared to ANY premium all-season passenger car including Micheline MXV4, Toyo Versado, Goodyear Assurance (any of them)... The CS4's ride better, are quieter, and have better traction.. and they have a better warranty (80,000 miles)

If anyone has any helpful ATX tips FTW let me know! Thanks

Back in Michigan ... again.
1. Brake boost off the line and launch about 2k. Enjoy getting him off the line unless he has a LOT of practice launching an MTX SHO.

2. Let the car shift itself. All the way. Yes, even at 6200.

3. Have tissues standing by to wipe the tears when he steadily pulls away from you, starting about 1/2 track. Equal horsepower (for all intents and purposes, your mods MAY get you an extra 5-10 hp), considerably less weight, less driveline loss and better gearing = MTX win.

Your only saving grace will be if your opponent really screws up the launch, and/or misses a shift during the run.

Comparing time slips from the near stock 95 ATX I used to have and the bolt-on 89 I also used to have tells the story. Slight ATX edge on the launch, equal times at half track but the MTX had an extra 3 mph on speed, and at the 1/4 mile mark the MTX was .3 quicker with 6 more mph on trap speed. Keep in mind, however, that my 95 ATX was a bit of a factory freak--it ran 15.04 with just a chip and exhaust, so I suspect average ATX-MTX comparisons to be a bit wider yet.

My advice......take a pic of the front of his car because you're going to be looking at the back of it by the end of the track!:nut:

You may get him off the line, but he will reel you in, and pass you before the end of the track...........

Good luck!

Get to the track early and pop the hood and let the engine (intake specifically) cool off. Intake temps has a big impact on my Gen 3.

Actually the best thing to do is make a bet that you will be the first one to the line. One run only. Then go on the third yellow light. Your boss, if he doesn't know what he's doing will go on green and therefore will have a half second disadvantage and you should get the win.

my SHO always ran best when it was really hot. If there was nobody at the track and I run 5 passes right after each other my third pass would be the quickest at 15.6 @88. first one would run high 15's and 5th one would be high 15's

edit: even with the turbo it is the same story. I can only run 2 passes because the transmission picks up nearly 30deg per pass though thanks to the tq made while brakeboosing at the line. With the turbo I think this is due to having more heat in the exhaust to spool the turbo quicker. by the third pass the brakes have a very hard time holding the car on the line to the tune of me standing on the brake and pulling up on the steering wheel as hard as i can. ahhhh the fun things we do haha.

Does anyone have any thoughts about tire pressure when drag racing? I am just running good all-season tires so they aren't super grippy or anything, but is it best to stick with stock pressure or should I adjust it for the track? Maybe lower pressure to get better grib off the line but maybe that will cause too much rolling resistance at the higher speeds? Or am I grabbing at straws now? lol

I've also run my fastest pass back to back to back.

one night the strip was real slow and I wasn't even shutting off my engine between runs... this is when I got the fastest ET and MPH

The launch will be the key to who wins the race. My 94 MTX will pull on my bros 93 ATX all day from a roll, from a dig, its a different story.

Pull up to the line. Put car in N. Left foot on brake as hard as you can. Rev engine while pressing brake. Let RPMs drop to idle. Put back into D. Brake-boost it from as high as you can. DO NOT LET GO OF BRAKE UNTIL YOU GO. Tire pressure will depend on the pavement ant temp.

Sorry but you guys are gonna **** me. LOL My boss backed out on me Friday because he is in the process of shopping & buying a new truck, so he said he wouldn't have time to race me on Saturday. He told me he would race me the next time which is one month from now (June 12th) so I will have to wait until then.

Sorry guys, I'm just as disappointed as you are.

On the plus side... by next month I should own the other car because I"m buying it from him. So either way I will be winning the race next month :)
