I thought I would share some pictures of how I changed the ball joint in my brother's SHO. On the how-to's there seems to be an absense of pictures of how to setup the ball joint press (with the adapter) properly. I took pictures of these. So anyone feel free to use these in your write ups (or add to them).

Looks like you could use an assortment of sockets and a c-clamp instead of the special tool. Thanks for the pictures, I'm about to swap some Gen 3 LBJs.

You probably could.. never really thought about it since you can just rent the tools for free though.

Thought I would add a quick note and say:

Do not try and raise the control arm up with a lift while trying to remove the ball joint form the control arm as this will not work (in most cases). You are trying to pry the control arm down, so this will not be possible with the jack lifting it up. It would have to overcome all the force the strut is pushing down on it for it to work and that is highly unlikely. From what I've seen, most times the pitman puller will just bend around the control arm in this situation. So, just keep lifting the car up either by the lift points or under the subframe until you have enough room to get your torque wrench under it.

Hope that little side note helps people.

What did you end up using to get the tapered end of the ball joint out of the lower control arm? I''m having some serious difficulties getting the knuckle and LCA apart.

If you go to your local O'Reilly's or AutoZone, they sell (and rent, I would rent!) a large and small pitman arm puller. Get the large one.

Once you have it, jack up your car, put it on jack stands, then jack up the car right under the subframe directly behind the knuckle in the middle.
- this will help the car get off the ground more so you can get the pitman arm puller and your wrench or air ratchet under there.

Once you have enough clearance, put the pitman puller around the ball joint and the LCA and get it tight to where you can start ratcheting it out.

I personally have a air wrench, so it was pretty easy to get it to come loose. If you don't have one, I don't think it would be possible without a cheater bar (probably 2-4 feet would work good) to get it to come off. The amount of torque required (if it is in there pretty good) will be too great with just the handle of the wrench alone.

After enough force is present, it should pop loose (most likely violently too).

If you've tried this already to a T, then I would suggest getting it as far as it will go and then try banging a 5-10 pound sledge on the sides of control arm. The idea is that it should vibrate free. I have never had to resort to this method, but it sounds like it should work.. if you have a lot of time on your hands.

Unfortunately, the LCA isn't the hard part. You have yet to deal with the rest of the crap in there, such as the hub and actually getting the ball joint out of that.

If you don't own a air ratchet, I would highly recommend investing in one. Sear's has one that does well for $60 with a 2 year warranty. I purchased the $120 one on a discount and it works awesome.

Good luck!

Had to go into the other room to see all of that pic....

But when i take out my axles I mount the knuckle and axle in the vise the same way and with a couple of taps the axle pops right out. Be sure to put the nut on to protect the threads and hold on tho the axle from below.

I wish the shop used this technique when replacing mine. I still have to post some pics of their work...

After I got my car back, it looked like they gave a drunken 5 year old girl a die grinder and said, "change those ball joints for me, will you?" I will let the pics do the talking, but it's pretty bad...

The technique above wasn't bad. Didn't do any damage, right? Not sure I would have pulled the whole assembly off, but hey, I have not tried to change ball joints on this car. I do have wheels bearings to do soon...

Yeah.. that's going in the sig.. :D

Nope, no damage at ALL! The way I pictured above is a great way to say.. change the wheel bearing assembly or the hub all together while preserving your ball joints.
