This is a car I'm looking at buying. The last thing I want to do is buy another SHO that needs an entire paint job. The hood is faded and the roof has a little bit of peeling clearcoat. Can that be fixed and the whole car buffed to a good shine?

If the clear is peeling then its a safe bet that its time for some paint. Buy it and wipe some diesel fuel all over it. Will look just like fresh paint!

uh oh... better get maaco.

my car has that but 10x worse. gonna try and save up to get it sprayed this fall or winter. got a baby coming first and wanna make sure i make that my priority before my SHO. gonna have to really push my bargaining, scraping and scrimping, and lucking out skills the next few months if i want to make any real progress on my car. all the relatively affordable things i want/can do to it have been done so far.

figure i need about $3500 more to get it to a point where i can finally be done with it.

other than the couple of faded paint spots the car looks good.
paint can wait, how does it run and how much does it cost?

Yes, its fixable. You could even do it yourself, if you know a little about body work. You need to sand off the flaking clearcoat (by hand or w/ a d/a sander and 2000 grit wet/dry paper) until you can blend it back with no haze at the edge of the existing clear. Then you can coat it with the rattle can clear from the auto parts store. After a week of curing, buff it w/ rubbing compound until you take off the orange peel and have similar gloss to the rest of the car.

Yes, I know the rattle can stuff isn't particularly durable, but its better than the stuff Maaco would put on....

Car runs great supposedly-just needs an idler bearing. Around 180k but has had brakes all the way around, timing belt, plugs, wires, fuel pump, radiator, clutch all done. A/C actually works. The guy is pretty firm on $1900, which is stretching it for me. (I know, how good of a SHO can you expect for a grand to $1500--but that's all I can do for now because it'll be awhile before I can buy a really "nice" expensive Gen 2). Plus this one is a 5spd w/ black interior.

Found another one...$1200 bucks 5spd but stripper model (no sunroof/keyless). The car had paint work done in the back as it'd been hit in the rear. The seller says the paint is the same but in the pics it's mis-matched looking (don't know if that's the light or not). Looks like they painted it silver frost and the rest of the car is opal frost. It's the rear bumper, filler panel, and trunk. The paint otherwise is excellent. It also needs a windshield and a driver's seat. The driver's seat looks like someone unleashed a hungry dog on it. It's destroyed. He said the a/c is temperamental and that the recharge kits at the store don't fit. It's a 94 so it HAS to have 134a. He was probably hooking it up to the wrong side. Not sure if that one is worth it or not...about 180k also. Clutch feels fine, has had a new timing belt and a couple other things done. It's a NO RUST car. A seat and a windshield is cheap---so maybe this one is a good value. I just want the damned keyless entry!

What do you guys think? I just want a Gen 2 to scratch that itch until I can buy a really nice one later on. Of course like the 90 it will get driven very very little. I can spare enough to buy a cheap Gen 2 and/or do a few things to the 90, but I have a wedding coming up and some other stuff. I've already budgeted for the important stuff other than my toys.

Couldn't have said it better myself! If you are on a budget, all this option takes is a little time.

Jeremy, I'm on the fence on this one. The guy did not describe that to me when I specifically asked about the body on that car when I called on it about a month ago. In my opinion, I think it's best to wait for the right car. If you settle on something "Just to get one", You are never going to be happy with it. Sure, Waiting for the right one is a pain the ass, Especially if you want one now but it's well worth it in the long run.

Yeah, the one I really want will cost me $$$ as in $3k or better so that won't happen anytime soon. I just wanted a Gen 2 to pick up real cheap to play with right now. I wasn't buying this SHO to be "THE" dream SHO because I don't have much $ to play with right now.

I don't think that's the car you are looking for. Save your money until you find the car you're looking for.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep my eye out for something better. I'm just afraid it'll be at least 2 years before I can buy a more expensive ($3-4k) SHO. I'll keep surfing here and CL looking for a good one. If I wind up getting another bonus this year, I'm golden, but our company hasn't been making $ so far.

There still are those diamonds in the rough out there--guy lost his job or something, guy gets a car he knows nothing about, etc.
