that is kinda what i was figuring, now i guess the other part of my question is that would this problem cause my EATC to cut out and my lights to stop working... is that a possibility???

i hope this really fixes my issue because this is getting old, REALLY fast... thanks for the help

Yes it is. If you are not getting enough power thru the batt. to run everything the less critical things will cut out to keep the engine running. The probs sound like and under or over charge.
Have you checked the batt cells to make sure each of them are full? If any are below the plates or empty the probs you described are a def possibility.
Has the Batt. been load tested? If it won't hold a load it won't matter if Alt. is charging right. You can start w/a charged batt. and it will gradually lose power as if alt. is not charging and again you will have the probs you described.

sounds funny, but one of the best-quick ways to check your alt, is to switch the multimeter onto "Alternating Current" if you're getting A/C voltage over .25-.5 volts, then you def have a bad voltage regulator.

you need to check your amp output on alt, if your pushing too many amps at the battery that could fry the battery. Let us know the amp and volt output on the alt. most part stores can do this for you at no charge.

Well one way i know that the battery is overheating is that the fluid inside the battery is boiling, and it is popping off the fill caps. that would be my best guess of the battery overheating. the tests i am running, i have a battery/alternator tester and they're both checking out ok but obviously something isnt working properly. I am losing electrical systems as i have stated before, first my bright headlights went out but low beams were ok, then me EATC would only come on at complete stops. Now one low beam headlight went out. Slowly but sure losing electrical systems so I am really leaning towards voltage regulator.

Sounds like it, and/or the batt. I think It is possible for it to output/test normal at idle and charge to high or low at higher rpm.

***update*** hooked up a voltmeter to the battery while running and its putting out 17.9v which IIRC 14.4v is normal running voltage and 12.6v engine off... so my general knowledge would be voltage regulator in alternator....

I would probably agree. However, I doubt that the electrolyte is boiling. The battery is probably just releasing a bunch of Hydrogen because of the high voltage.

Standard batteries boil with 17v 100amp input after 2 hrs of charge time. See it a lot at the semi dealer. And that's 4 batteries link in parallel.

whether its actually boiling or not thats what it looks like anyways... so i will be doing alternator and battery this weekend... would i have better luck with optima battery, anyone using one???

Any time a battery is gassing it is because there is more current passing through the battery than it can take. A well working charging system will just occasionally gas. If the regulator is bad you will get excessive gassing, if the battery is bad you will get the gassing.

not sure probably PM whiteman_01, or he'll probably respond to this thread sooner or later again.
HOLY CRAP I need to call Freightliner and all the other big semi companies, and tell them to stop the assembly lines and quit putting optimas in them!!! Along with BMW and M-B. Optimas are being re badged for use all over in the Auto/Truck Industries. If a new car/truck/semi has a solid cell battery, its a 90% chance its from optima.
