Hey all. I just got back from a local muffler shop, trying to find the correct exhaust hangers. The guy there said that one of my cats is burned up. Sure enough, it gets extremely hot (hotter than the other cat) and it has sort of a blackened appearance (although I think some of that is engine oil from my valve cover gasket).

He quoted me $225 to replace the cat. I did a bit of research, and found that I can probably get a whole new Y-pipe for not much more than that. But it seems like most of the Y-pipes I've found are MTX - any good sources for an ATX Y-pipe?

Thanks!

Catco makes one, part number 4294. And you are right, you can replace the whole Y-pipe for only a little more dough. :thumb:

I had to replace mine to pass emissions. It is a pretty decent piece, and weighs less than the stocker. I've been meaning to do a writeup on it. Anyway, here is where I got it from, for $264 plus $10 shipping (although I suspect shipping would be higher for you up in AK): http://www.discountconverter.com

i had a 93 mtx... and my brother had a 92 that he bought a catless y-pipe for, so we went to our local muffler man and he installed my brothers and then made me a y-pipe for $60! what a deal...you could sit it right beside a shoshop y-pipe and i bet that there was little to no difference.....wow did i get lucky!:nut:

The low ground clearance on my SHO has resulted in my testing of the cat replacement market. I just had one replaced last week with a high-flow Flowmaster (Mustand [edit: That was supposed to be "Mustang", but it looked funny enough that I wanted to leave it] spec) for $190. Call around.

So it might be better to have the cat replaced rather than replace the whole y-pipe? Would it matter if one cat was stock and the other was a Magnaflow?

I don't believe that the dissimilar cats would make much of a difference since the SHO does not have a tuned exhaust system. The ATX's Y-pipe is a much better design that that of the MTX. It doe snot [edit: There is another one of those unintentionally funny mistypes - I just picture this female deer with a runny nose - it was supposed to be "does not"] have the the flow-killing 90 degree bend at the entrance to the rear bank cat.

I got a second opinion, and the other shop said the cats were both fine. Passed emissions and everything. So it looks like the first shop was just trying to make a buck.

So I guess the moral of the story is, second opinions save money.
