I became concerned about the condition of my crank sprocket after browsing through the forum and reading about crank cancer. I changed my timing about 2 months ago. Everything went well, but maybe "a little to well." The crank sprocket came out to easily. The woodruff key didn't look damaged at all. The sprocket basically slid out without much effort. I read that many who have tried to remove the sprocket have had to use a puller in order to remove it. I didn't have to. Should I be concern? If I have to replace the sprocket, how much and can I get it from AutoZone, or only dealer? What do you guys think? The only problem I'm having with my SHO is that it jerks when I snap the throttle. Could this be related? What are your thoughts on this "jerking"? My SHO is a 1993 with 110,00 on the engine. Wires and sparks are in good condition, and no oil in wells. Still need to perform the valve adjustment. For those who reply to this thread, thank you in advance.

Some of the crank pulleys AKA harmonic balancers are i bit loose others are snug. Mine required a puller to remove. Just make sure you have that crank bolt tightened to spec!
The jerking you speaking of could be a bad sub frame bushings or a loose motor mount. Try a search on this items and you should find Info on how to check them. Shotimes Check out the maintenance section here it should give you some info on checking motor mounts and what not.

Make sure the crank bolt is torqued to spec!

I learned the hard way (see sig). When I went to take the front half apart, I could remove the crank bolt with my hand. Another tell tale sign is if you remove the top timming covers off and find fine brown dust everywhere. Not good. It took about 20K miles to happen to my car.

To get a replacement part it is dealer or junkyard only. I got my replacement parts from Al Fritz in Grand Island, NE. Cam sprocket, key, crank shaft $150

I believe he is refering to the crank sprocket that the timing belt rides on, not the crank pulley. I found on the few SHO's I've worked on that the crank sprocket is generally much easier to pull off than the crank pulley, but everytime I've worked on them they've required a puller to get them off.

And to PacoLoco, usually when crank cancer occurs the crank sprockey key isn't damaged, it's the crank pulley's keyway that get's widened from slamming back and forth again the key.

After I yanked the crank pulley off my SHO with a puller, I was able to grab my crank sprocket and pull it off by hand. Didn't come real easy, but it came.

However, neither the key on the crank, nor the keyway on the sprocket, were damaged. Both were in fine shape.

If you are concerned about it and need more peace of mind, go back in an re-torque the crank bolt.
