Hey guys, so I'm in the market for winter tires now and was reminded why I bought the Continental DWS06 for my first winter with the car last year. Those prices are crazy!
I know the tire size convo has come up before but couldn't find it.
Has anyone tried 245 50 20 on their SHO? I know the speedo will be off a little, but with the SCT tuner I can adjust it.
The new Continental WinterContact Si's are only $165 each in that size. Most of the tires I found in our stock 245 45 20 size are $250+

Unfortunately a new set of wheels isn't in the budget yet. Currently awaiting a date to close on our new house. Anyone know of any deals on winter tires? Best size/price for the OEM flowers wheels?

Hate put in budget, but NW-Pa I had no choice. debating when to put them on. Summer tires were not going to cut it. tirerack special on rims, and just a little over 1300 for all delivered

I think the most frequent substitution in the 20 inch size is 255 45 20.

I'm pretty set on the 245 50's at the moment since the price difference is over $100/tire. I was wondering if anyone tried that size yet. Being that I need 8 tires (for 2 cars), I'll need to find the best deal I can.

I wouldn't mind seeing what a little taller sidewall looks like personally. A little off subject, but other than the guys that track their cars, any reason nobody seems to run an all season radial?

If you have the space, dedicated winter/summer tires provide much better traction/handling and an overall better driving experience... not to mention added safety in the colder months...

Because of severe *** holes in Indiana during the winter, I went with 17" Sport Wheels and Blizzak snow tires. I didn't want to risk damaging my factory wheels and went with more side wall for added protection. The cost of replacing a factory 20" wheel is not cheap.IMG 2470 This will be my 3rd season for them and after the 2nd season, they still look new.

I really like the Blizzaks on snow and ice. When do you swap them out? I have waited until 2nd week of November when temps are consistently below 45 degrees.

Thinking 2nd week also, but am debating maybe this weekend. I am keeping an eye on weather in mountains of WV have to be there the week before Halloween. I have seen snow there 3rd week of October. Summers are 1/2 tread right now. Don't want to put on too soon as it might speed up the snow, lol

I used to travel Morgantown and Fairmont and you are right, get up into the hills of WV and the weather can change in a heartbeat.

On my vehicles (from Bloomington) I don't switch them out until our first substantial snow. Usually that's December or January. On my Jeep I actually swap them on/off all winter (wife's stay on all winter) since we rarely have a stretch of winter where there's snow on the road for more than 4-5 days and I drive 70+ miles/day. After the snow is cleaned, I spend 10 minutes putting the A/T tires back on to preserve winter tire life.

Winter tires aren't just for snow... they remain pliable in subzero temps to give you grip almost equivalent to summer tires in the summer when it's cold and dry.

I didn't say or really imply anything to contradict that statement.

In the video you posted it showed a 50% increase in stopping distance on snowy roads for the AT tires over winter. That distance is no where near as substantial on dry roads. I've been driving for decades in snowy weather. For my driving style, I have never noticed performance gains or needed winter tires without snow. I determine I don't need summer tire performance on cold dry roads (though I would have to see test numbers to believe that's true) because I don't drive the same in the winter (vs summer). For me driving 70+ miles/day just cruising I'm not going to burn through my winter tires in 2 year for marginal gains (not to mention the best winter tires like Blizzaks really only perform well for the first 1/2 of their life so I would only get 1 good year out of them). That's just my personal choice for my driving. I won't deny winter tires provide gains even on dry roads. Just not enough gains to be justified for me.
