Now that winter is over, I finally got around to looking at my car. It has been sounding worse and worse since I bought it so I jacked it up and had a listen. At first I thought it was the tensioner pulley. When I got underneath and had my wife rev it a bit, it was making fairly loud clanking noises. With all the talk of rod bearings going, I figured I may have to pop off the oilpan and have me a look (only have 165,000kms). The noise was concentrated around the catalytic converters though, so I took the car in to a local shop for a looksee. The muffler guy had a listen and also figured it was the cats, so I had him cut them out for $60. The one was all broken up when he finally opened it up. Well, after he finished welding them up the problem was resolved. Nice quiet idle and a nice rumble to the factory exhaust. NOW I understand the sound these machines are supposed to make. My engine now has much more power and the almost metallic howl it makes is intoxicating! These things really do pull ******* the top end! :****:

I loved the sound of my car with the cats out. then I opened the back windows while driving and heard what the car sounded like on the outside

it got a very large resonator welded on very quickly :****:

The broken up catalytic converter pieces are most likely in the cat-back section of the exhaust system. To enjoy the full flow potential of the exhaust, you should disconnect the cat ****** and blow the debris out of the pipes. Using a leaf blower on one exhaust tip at a time with the other plugged will go a long way towards clearing out the cat guts from the pipes.

Scott,

That's a good idea. I do hear some pieces shaking around in my mufflers so may have to give it a try to clear them out.

As for the resonator part - my car has a large bullet-type resonator on it which looks like it was put by somebody before I bought the car. I really don't hear much exhaust noise with the windows down, but may have to have somebody do a drive-by for me.
