I want to spend about $1000 in mods to my SHO over the next year. Can anyone tell me what the best mods to get would be? I know that there aren't many aftermarket parts available yet. The mods I've already performed are listed in my signature.
I'm very open to installing the Zex 75hp nitrous kit. Anyone here care to give any testimonials to the performance with the kit? Also, how hard is it to find a place to fill the bottle?
I guess the mods I'd like to do for sure are UDPs and nitrous. Anyone else out there care to share anything else I should look into? I want to be able to see the surprised look on even more faces than I do now.

I was at lebanon valley last year when mike h was there, I believe he was running in the mid 14's @ 96 mph or so with that kit. I know Tom W. with his ATX '93 is running that kit, and has turned high 13's. ZEX is a new company, but they have pretty good kits from what I've heard. I've seen a few, quality seems to be pretty good. Tom W has a built tranny in his car, but I dunno if I'd run 300+ ft/lbs of torque on a stock automatic tranny.

Hmmmmm....who dat in the SR71 SHO??? Mark??

I haven't run the nitrous since the dyno day earlier this year. The problem with the nitrous shutting off was not a faulty solenoid, but a loose connection to the TPS. Fixed that easy enough

My car has picked up a slight "flutter" recently and has thrown a few lean codes every now and then. Pronounced engine braking (like downshifting a MTX) when coasting from highway speeds. Until I figure out what's wrong, the bottle stays shut.

My best time with the 75 hp jets was 14.3 @ 96 or so. I hope to get sub 14's with the 100 hp jetting and the drag radials

The Zex kit is the best $500 I've ever spent. Scott Waters was running 13.8's at over 102 mph. He had a UDP though which might be the defining factor in my car being able to break into the 13's.

How hard was the zex kit to install? Do you think any experienced technician would be able to install the kit? Do you have to change the plugs from platinum to copper?

You sound like me. I've been crazy busy lately, and also still searching for a clutch that's up to the challenge of 12 sec passes...and still searching...

Mark, have you talked to Shawn at IPT, he has clutches supposedly good for 400 and 600 horse. Do you guys think anyone at Mazda ever thought the MTX would see that kinda FWHP, I mean Ransom with 409 it's scary

Just figured I'd put in a plug for the new guy on the block was looking at his site earlier.

The Zex system is super simple to install. It's truely plug-n-play. I'm not an experienced technician and I installed it in about 6 hours (which included time to think about where things were going to go.)

Yes, you do have to change the plugs, which isn't included in the installation time. Go with either the AWSF32C or AWSF22C. The 32C's are the same heat range as the stock platinums. The 22C's are one heat range colder, which will help prevent detonation. IF you go with the factory 75 hp shot of nitrous, the 32C's will be fine. I wanted the extra protection because I'm running the 100 hp shot.

Hey Mark! You going to the convention this year? All my time has been spent getting my car ready and working on the house. I'll get out to the track after the convention.

As for clutch info, there's a fellow member of NESHOC running a good clutch setup in his blown '90. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but there's info on his mods at: http://www.neshoc.com/members/ngiaquinto/ngiaquinto.html

I need to rephrase my statement. "Still searching for a 12 sec clutch within the SR71's budget". This car is all cheap, all fun. Not much invested. The car alone was $1000. IPT's clutch's would probably hold up fine, as would a couple from the SS. Both are somewhat expensive, but there comes a point where when you want to run with the big boys, you gotta shell out the big bucks. I'm aware of that, but I'm flying on a budget. I'm 13.20's for less $$ than some people have into just wheels/tires.

No I had to cancel my convention plans

but I'll be there next year.

Weather permitting, I'll be at the "valley" this wed shooting for a 13.1 on a stone stock over the counter Ford clutch.
