So I've been getting a code for a bad 02 sensor...even though my SES light don't work. I noticed over the winter that fuel economy was starting to suck and the car was stuttering at idle, so I took it to advanced auto to have the codes pulled, and there she was, bigger than billy-be-damned...HEGO sensor reading lean. That would explain the ****** fuel economy. Now...how would I go about finding out which sensor's shot so I don't have to drop $400 on all 4 sensors?

and does anyone know the bulb size for the SES? It ain't worked since I bought the car, lo these many years ago.

The code will indicate the specific sensor, what code did you get? Replacing both upstream O2's at the same time is probably a good idea if they both are the same age/mileage.

You'll often see O2 sensors referenced by 2-digits, such as 11, 21, 12, 22. The first digit is the BANK, 1=RH/REAR 2=LH/FRONT, the second digit is the SENSOR, 1=UPSTREAM 2=DOWNSTREAM.

SES bulb is a small one, I want to say 37, 73, 74, something like that. Definitely not a 194. I'm sure Paul can help out.

unsure of the code. It was a cheap ass code reader from Advanced, so all it told us was an 02 sensor was sending a lean signal to the ECU. Ain't there a way to pull codes on a V8? Kinda like the V6? I know I'd need a SES light in there....

ya im running lean too, replaced the 02's and still did nothing, checked the psi and its like 32 psi on idle, fuel filter was replaced...autozone will pull em too. i used my friends code scanner he got at walmart for like 100 bucks... it acutally worked better than the autozone ones...

Go to AutoZone or Advance and have them read the codes for free. All OBD2 codes are 5-characters (a letter and 4 numbers). Even the cheapest OBD2 readers give you at least the code if not the description. Post the code(s) you get.

"Lean" codes are usually NOT O2 sensors anyway. Normally due to a vacuum leak or an issue with the MAF.

Yep. My Mass Airflow Sensor caused my lean codes.

Autozone.... haha for reading codes. Just buy a scanner yourself. The 100 you spend is worth not having to let those monkeys touch your car.

Okay.....Methinks someone screwed up reading the codes. here's what I got from an auto zone code reader....

172 - Bank 1 indicated a rich condition

411 - secondary air pump *****

I didn't know gen IIIs spit out 3 digit DTCs.....at any rate, can anyone make heads or tails of this? Or is there any possible way for me to just pull my own codes and cut out the moronic middle man?

Get the Xcal 3. It will read the DTCs, clear them plus the usual good stuff.
