So I am just finishing my motor build and not sure which flywheel I want to use. I have a 9lb Fidanza Aluminum with only 1,200 miles that is shot, but I can replace the insert for $44 from Ultrarev, or I can just get one of my stock ones turned for about the same. I built a 3.2 with 3.0 cams, new Rod Bearings, Copper Plugs, Taylor 8.2mm wires, etc. Bolting up a SHOsource Catless Y-pipe eventually running a ZEX Dry Nitrous Kit. Anyway, which would you use, and why?

I also got a fidanza 9lbs , and warped an insert in no time.

In mine , it basicly has low torque and high hp (245hp at the wheels) , and the take off is tricky , i have to rev it up a little more then usual or its gonna stall. Low torque + low flywheel weight centrifugal force = fail.

If I was doing this again , id put the stock back in.

What clutch are you going with and what is the intended use of the car?

This^^^^

I have a ShoSource 17lb steel one with a SB Stage3. It works well. The aluminum one won't handle the heat as well if you are going to be drag racing it, but can help with shifts on a road course. SInce you are planning on a ZEX kit I would go with a steel one....either stock or lightened.

I use a stock Flywheel in my car. I enjoy how "stock" my car drives when I'm just putting around in it. The 9lb flywheel is cool if you want to rev quick (Let's say to blip the throttle for a downshift) but otherwise would be useless to me. The lightest I would go is the SHOsource 17lb billet flywheel.

I have a 9lb spec with a TZ I'm tempted to pull out of the '95 before long to put in the '91......my only experiences with driving lightweight flywheels are the 318ti and my friends sr20 powered 240. The ti went from a 27lb to a 6lb, and oh my did it make a noticable difference. I am worried however how well it'll hold up to boost in the near future since I'm reusing it. It made an interesting game though, "Will 140ish hp break loose 9.5" wide tires from this stop sign without trying" :naughty:

the 240 has melted 2 aluminum flywheels at the dragstrip, so I wouldn't recommend it for that at all.

I prefer the stock flywheel. Every time I begin using my 93 with the light wheel, I have to re-learn how to drive. It is fun to have the quick revs, but the stalling on take-off sure is a buzz-killer.
If you use it constantly, you will compensate for the light wheel on take-off, and all will be well...... but everyone else that drives it will have problems.

Sorry for the delayed response guys. My wife has been dealing with a migraine headache for 4 weeks and we've been in the Hospital since Tuesday @ 11:30am. Anyway, I either have a ClutchMasters Stage 1 that might be good (was mated to the Fidanza) or a stock one for now. Planned on a 17lb SHOsource Steel flywheel, and a South Bend Stage 2 Clutch. Anyway, I'm just going to get the Stock one turned for now.

Here is a pic of the Fidanza. Previous owner drove it HARD! (sorry Travis)

did the machine shop say that they cannot clean up that insert? I didn't think it was worn that deep...

I think the 9# is fine for daily driving, if you know how to drive a stick.... (I put 10k miles on the white 92 before I wrecked it.) but I also put a 17# steel flywheel in the RX7, just in case the Vortech ends up on it...

They said that they wouldn't touch it. All they said was that with it being a replaceable insert they wouldn't mess with it.
