I recently bought a 99 SHO with 56K on it and I need to know where the closest place is to Washington, DC to get my cams welded or pinned.

BTW - Is welding or pinning the way to go and what am I looking at price wise?

Protech Automotive in Gaithersburg. Hope you have deep pockets. I went there yesterday to inquire about welding and he gave three different numbers:

$680- Get's your cams welded, that's it. :)

$1050- You get the weld, replacement of VCG's & IRG's, oil change w/ Mobil 1 :(

$1800- You get the royal treatment, everything above, plus they clean all your intake runners and change your plugs. eek!

I'm a believer in doing a job right and "might as well do it since your in there," but was floored when he gave me that price. It gave me a reality check: Hey! These cars are butt expensive! It also made me consider selling it as well. I'll have to sit on this one for a while and start putting some cash away. Hope my cams don't blow! Let me know what you decide. thumbs_u

Disclaimer: I'm pulling these numbers from memory, as I don't have the exact price quotes in front of me at this moment. For exact pricing, contact Protech directly. This is not a rant about this particular shop, I'm confident they do top-notch work.

Kirk Doucette does the welding in central Massachusetts. I believe he's much lower than that for the welding, plugs, intake cleaned, upper & lower manifold gaskets, fuel injector o-rings, etc. Around $700 I think, complete. Email him directly at [email protected] to confirm his pricing & schedule.

what do those acronyms mean?

Garett I heard good things about SP but have not heard they doing welding at this time. Doug at FPS is also a viable option.

If you're referring to VCGs & IRGs:

Valve Cover Gaskets
Intake Runner Gaskets

Well, I set up a cam weld job today at FPS in Douglasville, GA for 18 Feb. It's only 650 miles...one way :)

They charge $450 for the cam welding and there is no warranty. They highly recommend an oil change on the spot in case anything metallic gets in there during the process. That's an extra $30.

Deacon, they have to clean the cams to weld them. They cant weld oily cams. the Oil change should be part of thier price since they are introduceing forgein material into your oil by cleaning them.

Oil change is part of the job and its included when I do one. It should be for anyone.

Thanks Kirk - I didn't think about the cleaners used to prep the cams for welding. The extra $30 is probably for the motor oil and filter. Maybe I'll bring my own 6.5 quarts of Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 and a motorcraft oil filter and see if they charge me $30 more.

Let me ask you this - How long exactly does a cam weld job take by an experienced shop like yours or FPS? 6 hours?

Well your just getting a cam weld and no other service. which IMHO is wrong but none the less, I personalle can rip the entire top of the motor off in 1.5 hrs. Thats Surge tank, runners, front runners, lower IRM, valve covers and drain oil and remove plugs.

What the do, should be able to be done in much less than 6.

Also do yourself a favor and change the plugs.

Kirk,
Just curious, how many folks would we have to get together for you to do a run down to the DC area?

DeaconDoug,
Would you consider rescheduling your trip to FPS if we got Kirk to come down here?
