I have a battery light that has been flickering since I wound it up in 1st gear yesterday. The battery is only one year old. Shlep Boys claims all the alternators for the 94 Tauri are the same. I don't think so. I know I need a 120 amp alternator. They want $200 for a Bosch.

Any leads place I can get a good deal on one?

I bought my alternator, that was recently rebuilt from a forum member. Cost me $35. I would take yours to a local shop to be rebuilt. They usually do a better job than the chains. Bosch makes a good product though, and if you're in a bind I would get that.

Ford Parts Network or any other Ford OEM parts place can get you a quality re-manufactured OEM unit. Probably the most dependable solution. Though the next best and cheaper is a local re-builder.

I talked to a local rebuilder and he said some parts for that alternator are unavailable... He said it would cost ~$150-$175 to rebuild it but with 152K mi. on it and 11 years of use, he said the parts he could not get would likely need replacement. Ford units are running ~$260-, Bosch is $219 from Pep Boys with a 1 yr. warranty and Autozone is selling "Duralast" with a lifetime warranty rebuilt for $179 and new for $174. I ordered a new one from Autozone for $174. I figured the price and lifetime warranty were nice to have.

Is Autozone's Duralast junk? I have read about bad starters. I'm thinking I should just pony up a few extra bucks and buy a reman Bosch to avoid problems down the road.

If you're going to pony up, I'd go with the Ford unit, unless it's a reman also. If it is, I'd go with the Bosch with the best warranty.

Bosch is starting to sound like a winner... if my alternator goes often or when I'm on a trip, the warranty will not do much good. FYI, the Ford units are rebuilt.

The PO of my car replaced the ALT with a Duralast unit and it seems to be working good. It was replaced 3 years ago. I don't even get a voltage drop at idle with all the gizmos running...

Great, that's what I have on order from Autozone. We'll see how long it lasts.

I bought a new Duralast alternator from Autozone and put it in last week. I was pleased to buy a new one for $174.99 +$30 core. Not only was it NEW but it was made in the USA. Sure beat buying a rebuilt Bosch from Schlep Boys for $219. According to the local rebuilder, he said the Mexican and Chinese alternators have a little more quality to be desired. So far, I am pleased with the alternator. I will update this thread if any problems with the alternator occur, otherwise all is well.
