Maintenance is essential with these cars. The PTU is the weak point in the driveline. Turbo lines in earlier models, turbos themselves as with any will wear out. The water pump on these motors aren't particularly unreliable but they are driven off the timing chain behind the front cover so it is a major repair if/when needed and can leak into the crankcase and **** the motor if not caught. Timing chain stretch can cause issues as well. They like fresh plugs especially if tuned, good news is they are comparatively easy to change and shouldn't break off in the head like the 3V 5.4s.
Personally I believe they are more reliable than the 3V5.4s which seem to all get cam phaser issues but a few things can get expensive to repair.

Agreed, records of proper maintenance are the key things you want to look for. A dealer will not be able to give you copies of the prior owner's repair orders due to privacy issues, but they should be able to at least report what has been done if not provide redacted copies. CarFax will also report a lot of maintenance, if the shop they took it to reports to the databases CarFax uses.

The PTU will start to get noisy and bind up. If the car is quite and accelerates smoothly, then the PTU is probably ok. You should not be able to break the tires loose if the PTU is operating correctly. The water pump is a ticking time bomb and will sometimes let you know it is ready to go by making noisy and or dripping coolant. But they have been known to fail with no warning and dump coolant into the engine resulting in engine damge/loss.

Just some calairification. The power transfer unit (ptu) is a 90 degree transfer case. The AWD system can fail (front wheel spin) with a good ptu. The Active Torque Coupling (atc) clutch that is bolted to the front of the rear differential determines how much torque is appied to the rear wheels. If the ATC is bad you can have wheel slip and there be no faults with the PTU. The PTU can also fail spectacularly and the ATC is good. Ive seen carriers strip out resultng in only RWD operation take out the ATC. The PTU does not determine how much torque is sent to the rear wheels.
