What do you guys think about my plan....

1)New brakes (I would do it my self but I stripped out the screws that go into the cals)

2)New struts (OEM probably)

3)New plugs/wires

4)New waterpump

5)New belts

6)Replace valve gaskets etc...(Pending)

7)Mid West SHO intake

8)CATCO high flow cats (universal) 2 inch??? or 2 1/4?? Which is better???

9)Have mechanic un do bends in Y pipe to reduce restriction

10)Summit mufflers

Somewhere in there I wanna get some Yokohama tires

Good plan?

Have a mechanic undo the bends in the y-pipe? Something like that would cost you a lot of money, since the y-pipe would have to be cut, the downpipes from the headers would have to be re-fab'd, bent, and welded back on. I think you'd be much much better off just getting a new y pipe. If it was cheaper to reduce the restriction in our stock units, we'd all be doing it. :D

Hmmmm....Good to know, Someone, cant remember who off the top of my head was telling me that having a mechanic un bend the Y-pipe it would be cheaper. I guess I would get a new Y-Pipe then. Not to sound like a ********...but the Y pipe is right before the mufflers right it goes cats->2 straight pipes->Y-Pipe->Mufflers...right??? I feel stupid asking but that is what this forum is for right!

1)easy enough to fix
2)OEM is fine
3)Good maintenance
4)Good preventative maintenance
5)Still good maintenance
6)If they`re leaking,it`s importaint to fix
7)Stock air box works well
8)stock cats aren`t a restriction,save your money
9)depending on cost and quality, may or may not be fine.
10)only if you want sound, there is NO performance gain to be had.

Where in Rochester are you?I`m in Greece, and you may want to take a look at my SHO when i put it back on the road in a few weeks. :)

I think you should crawl under your car and take a look for yourself. boink Then it will all make sense... why it's called a y-pipe :D

The y-pipe in in between the exhaust manifolds and the resonator. The resonator is in between the y-pipe and the muffs...

the head bone connected to the..... neck bone!

The Y-Pipe is the thing that makes it a dual exhaust right??? I feel like a tard over here! I always thought thats what it was, just making sure...

I would love to check out your SHO. I'm sure my old man would too...He has a 94 ATX...he got me into SHO's. I've had 2 since. Let me do a little fixin' up on my SHO. Maybe you could lend me a hand in that. I'll pay ya! $$$, brew, lunch...anything else you could need. I live in Albion NY...about 20 mins to a half hour away from Greece. I work at Webster Xerox and go by Greece every day. I live in a re-done catholic school house and I have a whole parking lot of space to work on car(s).

the exhaust goes from two exhaust manifolds into 2 pipes-into 2 cats -into a resonator- out to 2 pipes and mufflers. The whole exhaust looks like its is a X. The Y-pipe is the top of the X. From the manifolds to the resonator. and there you go. thumbs_u

Technically the SHO doesnt have a dual exhaust. A TRUE dual exhaust would have two pipes from all the way back. The SHO goes from 2 exhaust monifolds, into 1 pipe, then to 2 mufflers.

We do have dual mufflers... but...

I'm going to be getting the exhaust re-done on my '90 as well.. Why can't we just take that feed from the headers that is 2 pipes and run them straight back into seperate cats, mufflers, then out to the tips? Seems like this would be true dual exhaust and have least restriction?

I KNOW TONNY MANNO!!! MY UNCLE, DAVE BAKER HELPED HIM OPEN UP A&M! Tony is a good guy... not so sure about his mechanics (work wise) but Tony is the man...gives me good deals and what not.

After April, yeah...sounds good, by then I SHOULD have all the wrinkles out of my SHO. I would suggest a little race...but you'd smoke me. Let me know when sometime.

Sho Terror, I'm not the one to be askin about exhasut stuff...actually, you do not want to ask me about much dealing w/SHO's. I cant tell ya much except for that you cant squeeze a fart under the hood unless you take out the battery, intake, cam covers, cams, pullies, tires...blah blah blah...you get it

Jeremy's point list is right on the money. The only thing I'd add is a K&N panel filter would be a nice addition to the stock intake.

Also, so you maybe have a clearer idea of what exactly a y-pipe looks like, I have stolen the image below from Fred for you to look at to compare the stock y-pipe in the distance to the closer aftermarket y-pipe. See how the pipe goes into the rear bank cat at 90 degrees? The cost of replacement cats and the labor to modify a stock pipe are probably going to come close to the cost of just buying an aftermarket y-pipe. If you're going to half-ass this type of mod, save your money and just leave it alone.

Perhaps you should visit SHOTimes.com notes on the Exhaust System and SHOTimes.com Exhaust Design Notes to get a better idea of what you're talking about. Take care of your maintenance items first, then once you have a better understanding of the various SHO parts and mods you might start considering what mods in what order would be best suited to whatever it is you're hoping to accomplish.

Thanks Chris...Thats what I thought. I'm getting the feeling that the best way to go it to get the SHO SHOP Hi-Flow Y-Pipe w/cats. I have a K&N air filter. That was the first thing I bought for my car. Actually, I had it before I bought the car. I plan on fixin the ol beast up before I supe it up. I dont want to do more than the hi-flow y-pipe though, maybe aftermarket underdrive pullies.

Now you're getting it together. Open up the exhaust a little with the y, freshen everything up, and go from there. Think about what struts you put in there. The Ford brand would cost enough to probably get something better.

I know this is the wrong forum for this kind of thing but...here is the thing

I can get front struts from the local yocal auto shop for about 45 bucks a piece, I'm guessin the rear struts are not much different, I probably need more than just the struts...all that other crap that come with them. At 55 bucks an hour, how much am I lookin at total to get all new struts all the way around. My dad took his 94 ATX to a ford dealer and paid around 1200 bucks. I dont really want to pay that much. Know what I'm sayin?

It's funny man, your doing the same stuff I will be doing soon. I am putting all my estimates togather and I think i'm going to go with KYB GR-2 struts all around, they are about 40 dollars a peice, much cheaper than stock and are supposed to ride better as well as left for ever. I will also be getting new springs all around as well.

"true duels" is "almost" impossible to run on a SHO because of the tunnel. as for the stock cats have an exhaust shop do a back pressure test on them you might be suprised. also about the struts, do yourself a favor and replace the mounts and also the bearing plates up front. you'll thank yourself for it later.
