Damn thats alot more then i thought they could handle i thought max like 400
There are plenty of us making over 400 ft-lbs with our cranks. I am on a 20k mile crank that was only balanced and micropolished. They are plenty strong.

Not to be argumentative, but who has dyno'd at over 400ft lbs? While I am confident that the cranks have no problem holding that power, that belief is based on my own exeperiences, not those of others, as I can only think of 3 SHO's that have seen more than 400ft lbs (uncorrected).

Many boosted SHO's have 400 ft-lbs at the crank. My last dyno was pretty much right at 400 at the crank with a bad tune, no secondaries, and an electrical issue.

Oh! You did say 'with our cranks', so yes, a number of SHO's have seen close to 400 at the crank. And likely, since an S/C'd SHO is less efficient than a comparable turbo SHO, you were probably seeing more than 400 'at the crank'. But, since every dyno sheet I have been on measures hp 'at the wheels', that was automatically what came to mind. Regardless, these engines can take a great amount of 'punishment' before they give in. While I do not look forward to finding that upper limit, the journey there will be fun!

It's hard to tune all the electrical complonents when you have an electrical issue ;)

I've had a different harness to pu in for almost 2 months now... My time has been someone focused on a more fun car lately :)

Incorrect sir. Russ with FreakSho and Mike D with a black 91 broke stock cranks in Tx. They were not modified in anyway. But now FreakSho's is cryo'd. I'm sure it was just a freak occurance but it has happend.

Actually the rod journals were turned down .50mm under on Russ's crank that broke, and the new one is ion nitrited.

Anyways, I thought there were a handful of sho's pushing 400+ ft pounds at the wheels?

Other than Texan Tony's, I do not think any Vortech SHO has ever seen over 400ft lbs at the wheels. Then the few turbo SHO's that are out there. You need to get your car dyno'd John!

I believe only the guys who had work on their cranks, like knife edging or some shit.

Yup, its when the rod journals are turned that they break. The cranks have a very thin very hard layer of material on the outside of the journals. When you get the crank turned you lose this material which is why they break, at least this has been my experience. You can turn a sho crank, but you must get it re-hardened after, or it will most likely snap from spinning even to the stock shos redline on a a stock engine.

400tq at the wheels on a vortech takes a lot of boost because of the nature of these blowers and the small displacement, high revving motors that type of boost can really stress the motor. I do love the ever increasing torque/power they do have though. My STi has a smallish turbo that gives GREAT low/mid torque, but it falls severely up top. I also don't hit full boost on the first 2 or 3 gears, but the S/C does every time. With that said, my S/C can't give me 18PSI at 3k RPM either (not without a really, REALLY small pulley and a safety pop-off.

If I were to do it again on my SHO I would use a turbo. Don't get me wrong, I do love what I have and can't argue with the smile it put on me and my passengers face... Although the passenger is generally giggling like a little girl (and they're not girls) :)

I'm not naming names ;)

Hence an idea of mine. If I ran a smaller pulley like say 2.8 or 3.0. And using the BOV as a pop-off valve, like I am now, set at 9-10psi. The boost would start alot sooner and act more like a PD blower ( not as quick though). Would this work?? I already see 3-4 psi almost anytime I floor it. (sans 5th) It would be awesome to have 7-8 psi before 4k rpm. And then just hold 10psi to redline. Damn pistons!!! I mean if I'm limited to 10 psi, mine as well try to get it as fast a possible.

I already do this with my setup. I limit mine to 14 psi when my pulley will spin to 16 psi. This will run the compressed air a tad warmer especially if you recerculate.

Soon my friend soon.

Gmail and I are working out the final kinks with tuning and I am going to hit up a dyno with in a week or two.

Atta boy!

Positive displacement. I've got an Eaton M90 on one of my 96 V8 SHO's. I LOVE the stoplight to stoplight action.

Full boost at low RPM's. Frankly, I can't "spool up" a centrifugal blower before the car in front of me becomes part of my bumper, so I can rarely enjoy the potential of my Centrifugally charged cars.

I have a lot more fun in real traffic with the roots blower car.

Busy making another one right now, this time with the full 03/04 Cobra blower setup.
