Hi. I'm new to SHOs. Just got a 2015 non-pp and am struggling to get it registered because the DMV is closed for COVID.

Anyway, I've been reading the forums and came across a term, "the noisemaker." I see there is a noisemaker "delete," read about how there's no change in noise if you delete it, and I have watched a video where we get to see the concertina thing inside the noisemaker.

But, in all seriousness, what is the noisemaker, what's it's official purpose, and what, if any, noise does it make and why?

Curiously,

Sean

It's just that... A noise maker. Air enters it and makes fake engine noises. If you leave it, you should be fine. Or you can spend some cash on a factory pipe without it, or an aftermarket one without it. Or just remove the part that comes out and plug the hole with a Dorman 02603 Expansion Plug.

Either way, you won't notice a huge change but it does help ensure that it's not leaking air.

I plugged mine and painted it black. Some people have had issues with it blowing off (mainly using other plugs, i.e. a chair leg cap). Just make sure it's seated well and you should be fine. Mine withstands 19 PSI with no issues.

Oh. Odd that Ford would add such a thing to a $40k luxury car. I could see the part on a $25k car for a boy-racer.

Well it's a Super High Output model so we need to think our engine is reving louder lol.

LOL. Nice. I like that the car is kinda stealthy and blends, so I don't need the extra noise. ;)

Pretty sure I have seen these "extra cabin sound enhancing" devices on BMW, Jag, MBZ as well. Some are mechanical, some are physical connections to the firewall, some are actual circuits in the sound system that add a little simulated engine! The cars are getting so quiet that the sportier models need to reassure their owners that they are actually bada$$, without actually p.o.ing the neighbors.

Also, some like the Jags have a special circuit in the injection to give you pop pop-pop on deceleration, because RACE CAR! That can screw you though, an acquaintance with a Focus RS decided to get an add-on chip and rortier exhaust, and the backfires caused him to get disqualified at an autocross for exceeding sound. :shame:

FWIW the first "enhancer" I know of was on the MGB sports cars starting in the '60's, it was an extra noise box on the exhaust.

Curious that such things are important.
Its essentially a fake BOV, it was meant to sound like one, which the cars already technically have, theres a recirc line to the turbos that you can cap and you'll end up with a much better sounding and not entirely fake BOV, however the ecoboost uses this recirc for your next shift as the turbos wind down so your gonna hurt your performance a bit.

A Blow Off Valve (BOV) is a valve that is mounted on the intake pipe after the turbo but before the throttle body. A BOV's purpose is to prevent compressor surge. When the throttle valve is closed, the vacuum generated in the intake manifold acts on the actuator to open the valve, venting boost pressure in order to keep the compressor out of surge. Bypass valves are also referred to as compressor bypass valves, anti-surge valves, or recirculating valves. The bypass valve serves the same function as a BOV, but recirculates the vented air back to the compressor inlet, rather than to the atmosphere as with a BOV.“

Seems like the geniuses at Garrett believe there is no ill effect to running a vta.

I like their track record and apparent knowledge on all things turbo...

That being said, the noisemaker in question has a possibility to have boost leak, therefore has a legitimate argument for being replaced completely. Whether you use an expanding plug or a Lincoln replacement.

It appears your agreeing with me but elaborating? Is the noise maker not on the intake? That was my understanding

More precisely, I disagree with your recirc point. And you know as well as all of us that the noisemaker is right before the throttle body on the intake tube.

I dont know that as mine does not have a noise maker. And what do you mean? The recirc isn't technically a BOV?

The noise maker has nothing to do with any part of the BOV system. It is there to enhance in cabin engine sound. Unlike the Mustang that uses in car audio, the noisemaker directs engine sounds toward the driver compartment.

Our cars have BOV/air re-circulation valves. There is nothing fake about it. They are there to evacuate excess boost from hitting the throttle body blade (which causes surging) and to protect the turbo compressor from surge. Like Michigan-Sho said.

Ford also did not recirculate the excess boost back into the intake tract for performance. The SHO is an automatic. While going up through the gears while heavy on the throttle, the turbos never spin down, unlike a manual car. Our car you never lift for a shift, they shift quicky (esp if you have a GH tune), the turbos are small, so they really don't have any if zero time to spin down. That is why these motors work so well.

Ford vented the excess boost back into the intake tract to keep the car quiet. That was the easiest and cheapest way.

Now reciring the excess boost into the intake track on a manual car has some merit. Done correctly, it can help recover boost more efficiently when the throttle is closed for a gear shift. No lift shifting, and ignition cut sequential shifting helps as well.

Your 2010 doesn’t have one? Yours must have been modified with an aftermarket pipe. The following are engine bats from
2010 2016 and 2019. All of them have a noisemaker just before the throttle body. It’s the cone shaped plastic piece that points toward the firewall.

Please post a picture of your engine bay so we know what your are working with and where you are coming from.

Thats where I thought it was, its been removed and capped off, the guy I got the car from did a bunch of small mods like that an axle back, tinted windows, still trying to figure out what all he did

If you are willing, take a couple pictures of your car. Interior exterior stuff like that. Maybe we as a community can clue you in to some things you may have missed.
