i doubt any piece of bearing would be left on the crank. but if that is the case, a soft metal (aluminum) scraper could be used, as well as a plastic scraper.

Polish your crank yourself.

Use 600 grit wet or dry oxide cloth. Get it at a parts house. It comes as tape that should be the same width as your journals.

Cut a piece that will wrap around the crank journal about two times.

Soak it in solvent or even paint thinner.

Wrap a leather shoe lace twice around the oxide cloth. Pull on each end of the lace alternately.

It will polish the crank, expose any imperfections and remove them if your lucky.

Take your time and only do this until it is polished.

If you go this route, make damn sure you plastigauge the new bearings.

And if you plastigauge them and find out they are out of spec. what are you supposed to do then? Well I guess at least you know that the crank is out of spec and it's going to be time for an engine swap soon.

if the journals are worn too small according to plastigauge, you simply use undersized bearings (thicker, smaller bore)

Aew you implying that you can accurately machine the crank down to a certain diameter and go with a thicker bearing? Good luck.

My advice is go ahead and polish it with the most mild thing you can find. Get it as smooth as you can with as little polishing as you can. Then bolt everything back together, cross your fingers and drive real careful for quite a while. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Correct! They are undersized bearings! (most people say oversized) Cool points for Kenny :thumb:.... You can get plastigauge at Auto Zone, Checkers, etc....

Sorry for the interruption and the illegal thoughts that ran through my head.

Time to see the crank grinder. He will be able to supply the bearings you need. I would take a closer look at the rod attached to that bearing.

the only way you could go to undersized bearings and have a chance in **** of it working is to rip the engine apart, bring the crank down to your local crank grinder dude and have him properly turn it. If there are chunks of bearing stuck to a journal, I would bet that there are other journals that are screwed as well. You might even have a turned bearing which means it's line bore time. Cha-ching, cha-ching.

What I am saying is, if you ned to pull it apart, it would probably make more sense to find another motor. Not very cost effective to rebuild them when there are plenty goods ones out there.

Good thing those POS ATXs are out thre to serve as donors to keep the real SHOs running!

You might want to try 1500 or 2000 grit, then finish with crocus cloth. Those won't take much metal off. Wide nylon laces work just fine.

I got pics but they didn't come out right because of the glare from the
light so you really can't tell much. I'll try to get some up soon.
And what is crocus cloth?

the pics do not look good, well the 3rd one? its looks not too bad, but that first one is done for. It will just chew up a new bearing in no time.
BTW sanding a crank with sand paper to get you to a different size bearing is not going to work. The tolerances would be no where near what you would have to achieve.
