Driving along on the freeway and this happened. Took all of about 5 seconds before I realized something bad happened, slowed down and got off the road.



I suppose the best thing was the middle tread just came right off and didn't stick around to cause any real damage..

Now having to deal with rims not available and likely having to buy a whole new set..

Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 235/45 94W. Just realized I only have about 30k on them. Going to check on warranty claim.

Not sure where to go to get a Wheel fixed. Other than the road rash, there is a small chip at the lip, but otherwise seems in good shape.

Never lost control, barely felt as if I had lost the tire, it all happened so quick. Feeling very blessed to have had it happen how it did.

I had a pothole damage one of my ford racing cobra wheels and was out on the rest of the set. Finding those is like looking for hens teeth.
My updated advice for people getting wheels is get an extra if possible or make sure they are available in case you have to replace one.

There are wheel repairing services out there if you look hard enough. I'm sure there is one that will look at it if shipped but you shouldn't have to travel far to find someone. It's a cost/time issue and no guarantee it can be repaired so use your best judgement on that

Glad to see you're ok. I never liked continental but its just a preference.

For your wheel, try internet sites selling used parts, like Facebook Marketplace. Someone, somewhere, probably broke one of his set too...

Fortunately, I have no shortage of "other" rim's. To include both stock Chrome and base silver.

I have no qualms about the Manufacturer. I've used many Michelin, Avon, TigerPaw and Bridgestone finally settled on the Continental's as the best for traction in wet and dry as well as tread wear and road noise. Never used them in the snow, even though they are rated for it. I have them on both SHO's and my now retired Cadillac.

Avon's handled great, but wore a little too quickly. I replaced them after about 18 months with Bridgestone.


The Bridgestone Potenza's were the most hated love. They were terrible when came to wet. Even the smallest puddle would severely slow the car, while you never felt a loss of control, you feared the puddles. They were excellent in dry and dirty conditions though.

TigerPaws were great all around performers and drive comfortability. Better priced than most, but was harder to get what I needed, when I needed it.


After experiencing Continental's summer performance tire last SEMA, I will probably replace this set with those. Might be sooner than I expected though.

I have had a lot of tires also, and in the end have been, on the Gen III, happiest with Bridgestone Potenzas. I agree in the wet they were slow. But they were very good in all other conditions. The Yoko Advans I have on right now are junk, IMO, and as soon as they are a bit more worn they head for the scrap heap and I will go back to the those, though your thoughts on Continentals are interesting. Which particular model were you trying?

One mistake, the Tire Paw is a model of the Uniroyal brand, in case anyone was interested. Put the donut on yesterday so I can get it to the shop. It was also a Uniroyal. Just an interesting tidbit. The first time that was ever used.

I found a guy that said he could repair the rim, just have to get it to him next week.

When I had the Bridgestone's it was RE960's.

The Continental's I have used the non UHP's originally on my Cadillac (it had a 110mph speed limiter ), but have only used the DWS06's since I usually drive spirited. The one I experienced at SEMA was the Extreme Sport. The downside to going to that kind of tire is they wear faster, usually less than 30K. I drive about 25K a year since these are still my DD's.

Yes, I have had RE960s. They were very good tires. I might look into the Contac Extreme Sport next time I change. There is a good deal of tread still on the Yokos, but they will age out soon. The SHO gets very little new miles these days, as I mainly drive the 911 C4S or the Jeep. For summer in the 911 I am on Bridgestone Pole Positions, which are excellent, and in winter it goes over to Pirelli Zero winters, which are also amazingly good, particularly for a winter tire. The Cherokee Trailhawk has whatever off road tires came with it and they seem fine and are wearing well. No idea what I will replace them with when the time comes.

I have had bad luck with the Continental Extreme Contact DWS06s. I have experienced a total of 2 sidewall blowouts and 1 bulged sidewall all on tires under 30K miles. I swapped over to General G-Max AS-05s (also a Continental brand tire) and so far they seem to be more durable with little to no difference in grip.

When I called tech support they asked me if it was a Continental or General tire.

I was surprised by the Uniroyal TigerPaw GTZ's they were really good and not as expensive. Actually, when I bought them, most all the reviews were mostly positive.

Update:
I got the RIM repaired by a local rim repair shop. Chip that was on it is almost totally unnoticeable now and paint matched great.

I had a revelation about Walmart, they really aren't mechanics or a full fledged "Tire Shop". So they may be relegated to just balancing and rotating tires. Anything beyond that go somewhere else. They really only know how to do pro-rate, and know very little about how the warranties work. Having said all that, they are still people and was able to get the tire replaced for free due to the very low mileage.

That was last weekend. Fast forward to today brand new tire blown again in under 200 miles. The inside sidewall near the top is the where it was damaged about half way around the tire. Some of that damage may be related to having slow down and get pulled over. Looked more like it was ripping vs being cut.

I have been looking to see if there is anything that could be causing this, but I'm coming up short. They aren't rubbing against the suspension, and only the weep hole near the base of the coil is the only sharp edge. Even for the tire to hit that it would need to flex nearly 2.5" diagonally. It definitely hit that area when it blew. Looking at the other side there is absolutely no contact being made, even at the closest point of the tire bulge which is about 3/16" from the shock.

Hrm... Walmart is ordering another tire, hoping to have someone else take a look at my setup to see if I am missing something...

Final update:
Got Walmart to replace the tire again. I'm positive at this point they know nothing of manufacturer warranties. Buyer beware... Be prepare to pay pro-rate no matter what tire you buy...

At any rate, upon inspection of my car, while there are items that are wearing, nothing is so far out of spec to have caused either of the problems directly. Interestingly enough we did the inspection before the tire came back from Walmart. And upon putting it on we found what we believe, at least what caused the second blowout...



Well this goes to prove even more so that I need to find another place to do nothing more than put on tires... Especially for all the hassle they caused throughout this whole ordeal. With the end result being their fault.

For myself, I will insist on new valve stems going forward...

Oh, and that little bit of rash on the paint was my fault. Set the rim out-side down...

You are in the States? Up here we have Kal Tire as a common franchise. I do not know if it is in the US. But I have over the years been to half a dozen outlets here and darn if they do not actually train their people to the point where they know what they are doing. So, should you have one about, they are recommended.
