I was put on active duty for a year and my SHO was parked the whole time. When I came back the car was sagging in the rear big time so I took it to a Midas shop and got new rear struts. They also said they replaced the rear springs but another shop 1K later and last week told me the "new" springs on it are not new. Since replacing the struts I now hear a warbling almost clunking but not metallic from the driver's side rear wheel area when accelerating in a right hand curve. I also sometime hear it when backing up a grade even aligned straight. No sound when making a LH turn or driving straight ahead. I still have the sound even after replacing the tires because two of the old ones were out of round as it was parked so long. I went 225/60-16 back to OEM 215/60-16 to minimize any clearance issues). Any ideas as to the problem so I can point the shop in the right direction because I cannot afford to but the store. By the way the struts replaced with KBY GR-2's (are they adequate/good?) When I get some money, I'll go with Toks in the front with Eibach springs too.
Any ideas and assistance is appreciated.

It would be an unfortunate coincidence (for the Midas shop), but you should check the wheel bearings for looseness and wear. They are sealed bearings and are most easily replaced as a whole hub and bearing assembly (about $50 each from AutoZone). There may also be a probllem with the installation of the struts at the upper mount. Hard to determine without hearing the sound personally.

you know that sounds similar to a problem i have right now. mien sounds like it is coming from the rear passenger side when i have the steering wheel turned right in a turn. it sounds like a rattle/wobble. last summer i replaced the shocks/struts/rubber strut mounts(police ones)/ and rear endlinks. it is weird because it only happens on that one side. what year is your sho? if u do decide to put on a new wheel bearing, let me know if that was the problem. thanks.

You guys are great. I'm taking it to another shop for an evaluation. It is a 93 MTX w/75K.
I only recently got the car from my wife as she got a minivan but I got a SHO. I had no appreciation for the car thinking it only a FORD until I took it over. I'd like to fix it up a bit. Thanks again I'll let you know if and when the problem is fixed.

I have the same sound coming from the back passenger wheels when turning left, but I was told that the SHO doesn't have back wheel bearings.....hmmm i think that was wrong.

The rear hub actually has two individual sealed bearing pressed into the hub itself. This makes replacing the whole hub assembly a necessity for curing worn-out bearings. Once you get the new part, it should not take any more than maybe 1/2 to 1 hour at most to install. Very easy and straight- forward removal and install.

I have replaced several hubs and I know that one time (at least 1) it ended up not being the hub at all but a dragging brake that would cause the sound to come and go if I swerved back and forward.

After relacing the hub, there should be some play in one of the bearings if that was indeed the problem. Hope that helps. you can e-mail me if you need more details for install.
