While at Walmart today I found some Motorcraft Fl400S oil filters for $3.67 plus tax. Is this a good price? Is this the preferred filter for the 3.0 and 3.2l engines?

I use that filter as well, and it's a decent price but still doesn't flow the oil the sho needs it to up high. I think only thr K&N and mobile one was it, do that. My 94 gets that filter, the 93 gets the 15 dollar K&N.

Oil Filters

I know this is strange, but some guy at "Bobistheoilguy" forum takes oil filters apart and analyzes their ability to filter oil. The Wixs and NAPA filters are top notch, so are the Mann and K & N filters, but the house brand Wal Mart filters are nearly as good and much better than the Fram filters.

I've seen Wal Mart filters sell for $3.00 which is much less money than the others. This guy said the Supertech filters all excellent. They always have the large Ford filter in stock.

I'm certainly no fan of Wal Mart but when their oils and filters get as good a grade or better than the competition it is hard to want to pay more.

if you have an automatic transmission, some people have problems getting the larger FL1A filter to fit..... there isn't enough room for it to clear the radiator area I believe is the problem..... the automatic setup puts the engine more towards the radiator

Oil, filters, and fishing tackle are really the only things I ever buy at Wal-Mart. I can usually find some kind of SL rated oil, and I buy Supertech filters for all of the non-Ford oil changes I do.

Shouldnt have fitment issues with the filter. I run the big one on my 94 MTX with a dual core radiator. Also works on my ATX just fine.

I buy the recommended FL-400S because it is the best built of the Motorcraft filters I have looked at; note the silicone drainback valve. The FL-1A provides no significant advantage in my opinion.

Another filter thread? It's not filtering anything over ?x&^% rpm anyway.
I bought a case of FL400's cuz it fits the wifes 02 Windstar too.
It's more important how you cut the 2 liter soda bottle to cover your starter anyway.

Respectfully, since this isn't a honda forum, I disagree. Higher oil capacity alone makes it worth it, but greater filter area at a given psi will always equal a higher flow rate - or an equivalent flow rate at a smaller filtration rate. Many people, and almost all serious racers, run a dual filter setup for precisely this reason.

Plus, since the filter will flow more, the engine will be able to run at a higher RPM before the bypass valve opens. It's not a significant difference, but every RPM counts...

Of course, this is my opinion. I respect your opinion and your right to have it.

I would desire more info on this. I've been trying to think of a method of protecting the starter; plastic bags aren't cutting it. I'm thinking perhaps one could manufacture a shield that bolts to one of the starter bolt (on the other side of the engine so it doesn't affect the starter angle) and covers everything up to the solenoid terminals (shorting stuff is bad, mmk)? Might be something for SHOSource or Mike Kopstain to think about! I lack both the knowledge and wherewithal to do this, unfortunately (that, and I'll be in Iraq soon lol).

I must say, I've had much better access than I thought I would to here during my training.

Edit: FWIW, I run an M1-301 (FL-1A equivalent) on my wife's 95 ATX, and my 94 ATX when I had it. The fit was a little tight, but it was doable as long as you didn't install it too tight. If the subframe is all the way forward for whatever reason, I can forsee it being an issue.
