So I got to reading the instructions for adjusting the valves and, um, it looks all complex and hard and stuff. What is an indication that a valve adjustment is needed and since I'm replacing the valve covers should I just do it anyway and not be whiney?

Also, does anyone know what this doohickus is? It seems like it would come of the timing belt covers, but they all had the right ones on them when I put it back together.

Troy,
Those look like timing belt cover seals. The one with the curved part goes around the coolant tube from the radiator, I think.

The valve adjustment is not complicated, just tedious. If you come up on the 30th, I'll show you how it's done using an engine on a stand. Yours is still outside of the car right?

You could measure all the clearances with a feeler guage to make sure it's necesary. -Cant remember the specs... .006"-.010" int. .010 -.014" exh.....?

Not bad memory for a guy posting at 4 am then again at 11 am. If the covers are off, its pretty easy to take a few minutes (like 30 or so) to check the tolerances and conditions of the shims. Not like its manditory to replace a shim when its within the ranges.

Score one for Tom. It was the top thingus for the middle timing cover. Of course, that meant pulling the front of the motor back apart again. Oh well, it's pretty easy when the motor's out.

I'll pull the intake and valve covers off to measure the valves and see what they say. That's a good idea, Nick.

After that, it's on to the crank bearings and then back in the car. Whee!

I think that those are the things you can put between the clutch and the hammer when you bash it, so as to not leave marks on the hammer!

Rav.

P.S. It's probably not good to take car repair advice from me!

Eeek. Time has slipped by and I forgot to order my crank bearings. Anyone got any advice on where to get them by Friday?

Try NAPA first and then any Carquest parts place ought to have them somewhere.
