Hey all,
Working on my SHO and need to replace the valve stem seals. I had found a few still around on Ebay, but they are asking for more than $30 a piece plus shipping for the OEM part. Has anyone found equal Viton replacements somewhere?

There are two Ford part numbers, but the seals are identical.
Ford Part Intake: F6DZ6571AA
Ford Part Exhaust: F6DZ6571BA

Cannot help you on that, but have to ask, what games are you fanatic about? Back in real life long ago I was the owner of a firm that published games, among other things that it did.

Right now I am playing the crying game with the SHO... But ever SHO owner plays that! ;)

I've been playing games of all sorts since I was knee high to Tron. MineCraft to Dig Dug. Dungeons of Karin to Final Fantasy. From Ultima Online (alpha) to Trion Age. Lately I have been too busy to play mostly tower defense games and risk on my Android which is sad, but have been working on getting back into programming since my little nephew has shown an interest since he won an award based on physics using Javascript during the last science fair. Right now we are focused on HTML / JavaScript, but hope to work him into C# or something over the next year.

Last game I played was a Comic-Con during the Street Fighter V contest. Didn't win, but it was fun! ;)

All excellent. SHO owners that are also serious gamers are not common, I suspect. Though maybe slowly getting more so as older SHO owners sell off their cars to somewhat younger guys. And a few gals. :)

And please pass along my congrats to your nephew from an old physicist and occasional programmer. Get a good grip on both and the world is your oyster. :)

I'm also a gamer, I play Gran Tourismo 3 with my brother. Guess which car I take ? ;) But I'm not physicist nor programmer... :(

I'm an archivist, that is why I'm disturbing you. I remembered that I rode (and printed for my SHO bible) something about shim on V8SHO.com long ago... Doing this job, do you want to replace at the same time the valve shims ? (F6DZ-6514-AA) Ford said to replace them at 100 k.

http://v8sho.com/SHO/valveshim.html

(I play also to age of Age of Pirates 2, which is a old sailling boat combat simulation.)

Speaking about Gran Turismo, I just remembered I have a question for some mechanics experts.
In the possible upgrades we can do on cars, we can change oil for a synthetic one, which on some cars, can give an additionnal 5-10 hp... I'm wondering if it's really the case. (?)

Sure, if you already have things apart anyway in that area, you might as well replace them at the same time. However, I think the few people that have measured the shims for wear after the engine has gone a long ways generally found very little actual wear. But yes, if you have it apart and have lots of miles on them, might as well put in new ones. They are not expensive.

Don't know about the wear level but the only place guys spoke about were motos stores (29 mm on 4 cyl Kawasaki most likely).

Hey - got a possibility here.

Sorry to go back on topic, but I am old and don't play games online so much.

The valves for our V8 SHO heads are the same as the 2.5 Duratec heads use. I personally have never exchanged valve stem seals, but it seems reasonable that if the valves are the same, why wouldn't the seals be the same?

I HAVE used 2.5 Duratec valves in several V8 SHO heads with great success.

E1: I remember many years ago I think BabySHO had done the Duratec valve swap many years ago, but couldn't find anything on that post anymore. When I looked them at RockAuto the show the stem being longer, so that deterred me for the time being. Are they in fact longer? Do you have part numbers to match the ones you used in the past?

The Duratec seals are significantly different, so I'd have to have one or get the specs to see if they would work.

At any rate I know the inner diameter of the stem seals is about 6mm (5.96mm is what I measure) for the inner diameter at the stem. Internal diameter ~10.795mm and outer diameter ~13.32mm. Having found a few sets of toyota seals sitting in my Bro's garage for a few years which fell within these specs. That led me on a chase to see which cars they might be from, and it appears there are several. Using the 1996 2.2L Celica I can search the various manufacturers for proper seals. I even found Fel Pro performance series model 2536 are about the right size per their catalog. Material and brand is in the eye of the beholder. I'll probably go with the sealed power model ST2113.

Gen 3 Sho Fan: My Bro, who has been a mechanic for many years, noted that these heads reminded him of Toyota's and others. Generally speaking he has never seen shim issues which required replacement. Obviously always check for clearance, but even after 200K he found them within spec.

Ok thanks for the infos because I have near 140 k on mine, run perfect but time going by and I'm wondering if I will have to do this kind of reparation...

Why are you replacing these seals / which problem(s) they create when failed ?

(Strangely, I rode recently on Wikipedia that Yamaha worked on the 2000-2005 Toyota Celica motor. Toyota create the base motor (1.8L 4 cyl.) with 143 hp and for the sport version, Yamaha takes the same motor and create 192 hp without turbo nor SC...)

Problem started with a leaky head gasket. Since I'm in there and working on a 15+ year motor with about 120K on it, I want to do as much as possible before tightening her back together.

My uncle had a 70's charger (can't remember which year) which originally came with traditional oil. He was a car buff and had some early computers which would take readings from from the car and give him some info like MPG. During those days there weren't many options for Synthetic oils, so he used Ams Oil to replace the traditional. He was able to record the changes in MPG. Part of that is due to the viscosity of the oil as it heats up. Traditional oil doesn't transition well between the various viscosities, where Synthetics do. Below is a link that hopefully can explain this principle better than I can.
