Im starting to do work to my 98 that ive had for awhile, it all stock, i plan on putting on Magnaflow XL Turbo mufflers, silencer cone saxaphone thing removal, mabey 3rd cat delete. I know things with the gen 2 like BBB and ported intake but never saw any of that for the V8's. I saw something recently about gutted secondaries? I dont know much of upgrades for the gen 3 so if any one can tell me of some and what the gutted secondaries are i would very much appreciate it. Thanks

If this car is your DD, Id do the exhaust work and pull the intake sax and leave the rest well enough alone. Ive seen 100% modded gen 3s race a 100% bone stock one and be dead even if not even beat it. Gen 3s make the best cruisers ive ever driven I wouldnt lose that to gain likely nothing.

Storm Trooper, SHO RTS, Whoosh . . .

I think Kirk Doucette, Eric Lehmann, Carter and probably a bunch of others would have something to say about this statement. :naughty:

These guys have produced as close to a 100% modded Gen3 as any I've read about (not that I've read about them all). Paul also did a ton of stuff to his 97. I remember Ron Porter had a great track time running 87 octane, but I don't think he was stock. Long time ago though . . .

To the OP, since I mentioned Kirk and you're in the vicinity, Google "Northeast SHO". From what I've read, he knows the G3 about as well as anybody. Warning though: I just went to the site and got a bunch of unsigned app requests, but hitting Cancel about 12 times stopped the pop-ups.

The "secondaries" are butterflies in the lower intake that cover half the ports.
They are controlled by the IRCM (intake runner control module) and only open above 3400 rpm.
They are supposed to improve fuel economy a little bit but also supposedly restrict a small amt of low end torque.
In a lot of high mileage cars the mechanics gum up which causes the control module to fail so they are always closed.
They can either be wired open or you can physically remove them from the intake. When I had my intake off I looked at removing them. It looked to me like it would require some drilling lot of small holes would be left behind that would need to be filled. Not worth the hassle IMO.
I just cleaned the carbon deposits and put it back together. At 148+k the secondaries are one item in my car that still function like they're supposed to.

Lol dont get me wrong i agree that some are very wicked! Especially that S/C one but the amount of money and work that was dumped into some of those cars, was rather big.

My point was the Gen 3s are a lot like the 1st and 2nd gens in the way that there were just freaks out there that ran way better than they ever should have.

If you want to pull the secondaries/butterflies my recommendation for filling those holes would be some JB weld and then sand it smooth. The biggest thing i would recommend would be you pull your intake clean it and port match all the gasket surfaces around the heads, butterflies, and lower intake snakes.

If you wish to go further your looking at some pretty much custom made parts, I guess it breaks down to your budget.

While we're still on it, the UDP is worth mentioning. Will run you a few hundred $ and requires an aftermarket belt, but among the higher raters for "bang-for-the-buck". All necessary info for this is here (I hope!):

I used to see some aftermarket TCs on shosource but never heard any results from folks using any of them. Now I see they've been taken down. I guess upgraded parts for a weak overall assembly are hard to market.

If I were modding a gen 3 and I had the money, I would rebuild a engine with larger pistons. There was discussion years ago that #3 size Contour pistons are slightly larger than the #3 SHO pistons and they would work.

My engine was a "factory freak" and it had mostly #3's and a couple of #2s. Kirk pulled it apart and could tell you better.

Then I would do some thermal management. These engines are very sensitive to heat. Some phenolic spacers in place of the intake gaskets. Jet-hot coat the intake runners (I did this). I always wanted to do some kind of subtle hood scoop to cool the intake runners. Something like a WRX or even a Rav4 Chilli edition. Something that wouldn't look too out of place. You know not like a J-body with stick on fake scoops.

I think with something like that you could get it to run 14.5 on a cold day, maybe better. Throw in an MTX, decent tires and weight reduction and you could see 13.9s under perfect conditions.

I still ran a 15.1 or even a 15.0 with the second engine. With year old gas to boot. I'm not sure that engine was a strong as the first but it was still capable of high 14's with the right air.

I don't have a listing. I did have a ad here but that was a few years ago.

What do you need?

Interested in the spacers. And when the funds become available, want to give it a tune.
