The trans on my 98 recently went. I know that the last owners change gear while still rolling backwards and they did that all the time. When i would put it in R it would roll forward then bang into gear. And the first while of driving it in the day it would lag and bang into gear. I know its hard to know just by the desciption i was just wondering of anyone knows of what exactly is wrong from past experience and what not and how much it can run to fix. I havent had a chance to take it to a shop yet

Thanks
Joe

it needs to be rebuilt. depending on how many hard parts are broken from the "bang into gear" it could run anywhere from $1500 to $2500+

Yeah, Id say needs total rebuild. I was quoted earlier this year around $2200, that's them doing everything. I got lucky and found a recently rebuilt one out of a 97 for $550. Good luck, if you love the car and the body is solid then fix it.
