I am looking at a used trans from a wrecked 93, was rebuilt by original owner 18k ago by a friend, and even through the friend he spent 1600 on it. The owner who has it now has the receipt, but it does not mention if it has a shift kit or not, which I really want for my 95. It's a good price but I'm wondering how I could tell if it has one or not, also how much it would cost to have one out in, I'm guessing it would have to be rebuilt again, right? I have a shop here that will R&R, rebuild and put a shift kit in mine for @1600, I'm afraid if I need to put the kit in the used one I wouldn't be saving anything, so what I'm wondering is if there was a way to tell if the kit was in or not because the owner isn't sure.

To install the TransGo kit requires about a 80% rebuild of the tranny.

Quite honestly, with the tranny having been rebuilt that recently, I'd just go ahead and install it, and get a Ted B. LPM to firm up the shifts and adjust shift scheduling. The TransGo kit doesn't make a real performance difference, it's more of a lubrication and calibration improvement. In fact, Ted recommends against having the springs for the firmer shifts from the TransGo kit installed in favor of managing the line pressure through the PCM via an LPM.

Rebuilding his tranny just to add the rebuild kit will at best add about 20% to the life expectancy of the tranny, at the expense of a complete rebuild.
