I have a buddy trying to sell me a used SCT X4. From what I have read it comes with 3 open slots and he has only used 1 for his F-150. Does this mean the other 2 slots I can use for my SHO or do I have to buy the tune from unleashed before I can do anything with it? I'm new to using these tuners and just trying to figure out if this is worthwhile since he's selling it to me for a decent price.

The tuner has 2 unlocks left, if I am reading your statement correctly (I thought SCT's had 5 total tho). You will need to purchase a tune for your SHO before it can be used to tune the SHO (although there may be "builtin" tunes from SCT). Check your strategy code with Torrie, see if SCT supports it or not, sometimes the support has to be added into their database.

It costs about $200 for a Torrie tune set. So wouldn't pay over $250 at best for an unlocked X4. Especially if this is a handmedown unit to begin with. What warranty would you have?

Hmm okay I might be wrong on the 3 unlocks then. What exactly do you mean by the strategy code? Also are you asking me what warranty I have on the car?

What you usually do, at least in my experience with an X3, is return the original vehicle to stock. Then you can load whatever tunes you want on the tuner, and upload them to whatever vehicle you want. Once you do that, however, the tuner is "locked" to that vehicle again. You'd need to return the vehicle to stock before it can be used on another vehicle.

If you buy a used tuner, SCT will unlock it for you, but I think they will only do that a certain number of times (5?)

Kelly is asking what warranty you'd have on the TUNER. The strategy code is basically the calibration code for your car's current flash. Whoever makes your tune would need that strategy code before they can generate tunes for your car.

As for "slots" - the tuner will hold a total of 3 tunes. But again, from what I know, I think you can only "tune" one vehicle at a time. You need to return the current vehicle to stock before you can use it to flash another vehicle.

Unless it is a steal of a deal, I have always thought it made more sense to just buy a new tuner and tunes directly from Unleashed or whatever tuning company you like if you want to use the SCT device. Isn't like $499 at Unleashed for the device with 3 of his custom tunes - even less if you only want 1 or 2 custom tunes? He also runs specials from time to time.

But since I live in Canada it becomes like $650 for the tuner from Unleashed.

I understand! Looks like his tunes have great pricing if you can get the tuner cheaply enough and make sure it is unlocked. I am sure you will love the tune if you can get it done!
