Would you trust putting one in?

With a price tag of $130 for a reman, or ~$50 for one pulled at a junkyard, which would you go with?

Mine has been weak since I got it. it doesn't leak at the pump, but toward the cooler I beleive. In parking lots, or anytime at a stop, it has almost no power, making parrallel parking extremely difficult.

I'm doing my front 60k over the next week or two, so while I have access (somewhat anyway:nut:) to it, I want to replace it. (as fun as it sounds)

Thanks!

Id grab one in the JY if its not leaky , these things rarely go bad anyway. The odds are good.

I gues the other part of my question (which I didn't search much for), would be wether it was the pump or the rack.

Like I said, at a stop I just plain can't turn the wheel without struggling. It's like the belt is slipping, which I have had happen on past cars. But it only squeals when you crank really hard. It's not jerky through turns, and when the car is moving more than parking lot speeds, its fine.

It is totally different than the '93, which you can turn with one finger at a stop. That also might be VAPS vs. non-VAPS???

All shos should be able to turn with one finger. the VAPS (if equipped) kicks in only when you are at higher speeds like 60 , more you are speeding more it gets stiffer.

I had a simillar issue with mine But I replaced both (pump/rack) to be sure to eliminate the problem at once (the subframe was down and I had access to everything) It surely fixed it but I cant tell what was causing it.

well, I'll have my front end torn apart for at least the next week or two, so if it is the pump now's the time. If it's the rack, there's never a good time....

On another note, WTF, how does this thing come out? Is it easier from the bottom? We both have our SHO's torn down to a similar place so I think Joe and I are going to replace both of them.

jthod, you have PM!

Here's my belt jthod btw!

Do a search for a write-up I did on this a while back. The PS pump is pretty straightforward to remove from the top. There is one mounting bolt on the back of the bracket you must reach from underneath using a long socket extension across the back of the engine. The pressure line is a bit of a challenge, but can be loosened from the pump using a crows food wrench with an extension from the top side. I recommend a new pressure line.

I'd have no problem with a used pump; the main advantage of the rebuilt pump from Cardone is it has been bench tested and you get a warranty.

I'm starting to wonder if it would have been easier to just drop the subframe to do this work.:nut:

Seriously.

Seriously.

If you have the proper tools , and no-A/C lines or whatever related to A/C gone (like mine) , I seriously think it would be easier to drop the subframe to replace BOTH PS pump and rack , but to drop the subframe to do only the PS pump , thats a tad stretched.

I'm doing the front 60k as well.

I have the A/C in there, but it has leaked out over the past year, and has nothing now.

Where I'm at now, it's not worth it, but had I been thinking, I might have just attempted it.

Its so blasted much work to do it, I'd put on a reman/new pump rather than a used one...
