Ok I MAY be in the market for a used or rebuilt tranny from somewhere inside of New York state, preferably upstate within the next week. I am trying to diagnose this problem with my tranny that nobody can honestly seem to pinpoint. It works PERFECTLY, although there is this terrible ticking in every gear except for 5th and as far as I know, reverse. The noise is certainly there until 5th gear, I can shift into 5th even at 30 mph and it goes away. I HAVE to get this fixed this week. I don't mind taking it to have it rebuilt or whatever just to get this baby back on the road, although honestly, I'd like to get out of this as right and inexpensive as possible as I am about to have it repainted and stage 4 done. PLEASE help, I made another thread about this a couple of weeks ago with not too great of a response. I have an unbelievably clean 91 SHO sitting here begging me to rip it around this summer.

I may be wrong but it sounds like your throughout bearing. The spelling is probably wrong. Good luck!

does all of that lead you to believe it's the throw out bearing??? Being that I have this annoying ticking noise in every gear but 5th??? Why would that noise go away in 5th gear??

I emailed u, but haven't had a chance to get back to you. Call me, or shoot me an email, I can look at your car this weekend, and figure out what it will take to fix it.

If the ticking stops when you push in the clutch then chances are good this is a clutch problem.

OK I just test drove it in my neighborhood and the ticking did not go away when I push in the clutch and just roll. Doesn't it seem though that if I push in the clutch it is disengaging any gear it's in, thus ruling out the tranny? It seems like it would more or less put it in neutral because even though you're still in gear, you could step on the gas with the clutch in and you wouldn't accelerate. It seems like that would rule out the tranny. GOD I hope so. Also Shotyme, I appreciate it.

half-way there, I think.
That won't rule out the tranny - when you are rolling in neutral - does the noise stay constant even if you rev up the engine?? If it stays constant with the speed of the car the following could be the problem 1)The Diff 2) CV axles or 3) or something else in the drvieline. If the noise follows the engine rpm's than it could be 1) Clutch 2) Engine related - bearings, valve tap, etc.

But how does it explain going away when I shift into 5th gear, wether I shift into 5th at 60 or 30 just to test it. Yes the rythm of the ticking gets faster as the car goes faster. I was told 2 different things by 2 different mechanics so I am scared to say just do it. I'd rather have at least 2 people agree on what it is and THEN fix it. I don't think its anything in the engine because of the fact the sound goes away in 5th. I thought it wasn't the diff because I have always heard when they go they just go period but this noise has been there for a few months, I just have been barely driving the car.

It has to be something in the tranny - shift fork or bearings - I can't recall how the MTX is laid out - but I'm willing to bet that since 5th isn't making any noise and you indicated that reverse seems to be quiet - that it's related to a shift fork. Just my 2 cents.

I'd put the car on jackstands and get the front tires off the ground. Have somebody run through the gears (at idle!) and listen underneath, poke around till you can figure where it's coming from, and try to work from there...

Would you guys recomend buying a used or rebuilt tranny from someone on these boards and having my mechanic put it in since he has to get to that area for a motor mount and power steering hose anyway.. or taking it to a tranny shop and having them just rebuild it? My normal mechanic said he doesn't work on trannys but he'd swap one if I brought it to him. I think I'd still like more opinions and maybe someone who knows the SHO to look at this before I bring it somewhere. I don't mind taking it somewhere I just got nervous that 2 different mechanics told me two different things.. makes me think they will get into the repair, not fix it, and then say well we need to do this and this and that/

shobuff91; get ahold of me as soon as u can. I will be at work until 5.00 Thursday, and 5.30 Friday. I have Sat & Sun off. I have a lift, and can diagnose it better.

If it comes down to rebuilding, I have most parts to do it. I have already done two of these.
