So... Trying to decide which way to go on this as it is my daily and not a full blown race car... Turbos are getting a bit tired and I'm deciding which to do, upgrade or just get stock replacement and save the money for other ventures. I know there are great reviews for the GH turbos, ATPs and CRP so I know upgrading would be amazing. However I am curious if anyone had tried any of the aftermarket OEM replacements and had good luck with them. I can always use my discount to get FoMoCo turbos from the dealer if there aren't any good AM replacements. I'm trying to curb the need for speed a bit as I'm pretty much maxed out on what the stock turbos can do but I have no interest in building or buying a motor at this point in my life.

My GH Gen3R are based off a non-oem turbo. Was told quality is the same as OEM so said why not. Now... Which aftermarket turbo that is the real question lol.

That actually does make me feel a little better tbh. I honestly would love to get a set of GH turbos but they are out of stock and I don't know how I feel about spending $3k right now since I just bought windows for the house. Something tells me I'll probably end up with stock size turbos in the end.

Out of stock is a bad thing for them to put on their website because "made to order" is more like it. Hit them up and see what they can do for you. It's usually an email inquiry item like the intercooler used to be if that makes sense.

Ehhh the R qauilty can be debated ive only seen 2/3 sets of them. Both of them mine where Scrubbing right out the box really bad, Now there getting looked at by someone I trust. I would need to see more of the R’s to be confident they are built to Oem. My turbo seals where going out on my stock ones and the wheel moves just as much as my new 3r turbos and the old ones had coolent run thru them and the new ones I prefilled with oil when I tested the wheel movement. NOT SAYING anything bad about them don’t take this the wrong way, but I feel like for mine it could of been better for the 3k price tag.

I feel like aftermarket tubro's are a commitment to an eventual engine rebuild.

I have that feeling as well, if I ever did build a block I would start completely fresh. I haven't done an engine build in years and I really don't have the time or space to do it even if I did want to.

I need to replace my rear turbo, and I'm thinking "Well, while it's out.... UPGRADE" but honestly I just want to stick to the stock turbos. If it was longitudinal, I would probably do it. But it's my daily and I'm always scared about the trans grenading with the way I drive. I do wanna look into upgrading the waste gates and some of the plastic parts.

It’s a slippery slope.

stock turbo holds the car back
Stock motor holds the upgraded turbos back
Stock trans holds the built motor back

that transmission!

weight Reduction reduces the strain on the trans and thus allows more play time (borrowed)

edit: speaking of transmissions, there’s an explorer ST across the street from the house I’m working at currently. Lots of snow. Twice now I’ve seen it back up, go into drive, rear tires spin for a second and it’s gone. Now that is the trans we need. Super jealous

I see those explorer STs everywhere. That means they are selling and are common. Im sure in 3 year when the kbb price is in the dip they will be a good deal. Same with the sho i got now, got it a 2 years later when it hit the low dip on resale. 22k with 20k miles on a 2 year old sho, i felt like i was boostin it.

Edit: with my hip young lingo, boostin it means stealing it

Isn’t “boosting” old lingo? Or am I 40 years young?

Yah the Explorer ST is everything the SHO should have been! Raybestos has already committed to making gpz clutch pack for the 10R60 trans. I’m hoping to have mine in the 10’s by the end of the year :)

Very often I wish the SHO was an SUV. I didn't want a second truck since I have my F250 but my girlfriend can't stand riding in it so getting furniture or anything is a bear. I think the explorer st may well replace the sho someday.

My ******** forgot the bronco existed lol, I can't see getting cm explorer over that tbh.

I think it depends on what you want to do with the vehicle. The explorer is more of a “speed bump in the parking lot” offroad machine.

The Bronco is going to be for the Jeep Wrangler enthusiasts that want a Blue Oval on the front. Something capable and sturdy with more power.
