I was just looking around and imagining what you could do with a V8 SHO (I don't know a ton about cars so that lets me dream beyond what is realistic sometimes) - but I was wondering, would it be ridiculous to put a turbocharger on a V8 SHO? I saw a couple of the V8 SHO's with superchargers (which look very very nice!) , and the Gen I's, and II's that have turbochargers, and even one guy who claimed to have a twin turbo Gen II SHO.

I was just a little curious - I haven't seen a turbocharger on a V8 yet, and I didnt know if it was because they just plain out wouldn't work, or if their were a lot of problems that came with turbochargers. I would guess a turbo on a v8 SHO would probably be a bad idea, because it seems like that would give it a lot more power off the line, and that seems to be what the v8 SHO is lacking.

There was some discussion on this topic recently, see here .

I had spent a fair ammount of time researching the feasibility if turbocharging the SHO. However, due to another child being on the way and wanting to add on to my house this project is getting put on the back burner.

Anything is possible! If you had the time and money to take on such a project, sure it could be done. however, space is a little cramped on the v8. but if one were so inclined i dont see why not.

but aren't turbos smaller than super chargers? and if they aren't as ******* the engine, that would seem like a much better method of increasing power....

it just seems like superchargers are at least somewhat common, but turbo's in V8s seem unheard of. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a turbocharged V8 on any car...

I'm guessing they are very difficult to install - or the intercoolers to go with them take up a little more space?

Turbos are larger, because they require an intake compressor wheel, as well as an exhaust-driven wheel, where superchargers only need the intake compressor and a pulley.

oh ok, so since it's already crammed inside the engine I'm guessing you'd either need a new hood to fit a turbo in or you'd need to take some stuff out? sounds like a lot of work...now i see why it isn't too common :p

so how about a twin turbo then, is that something that could be done on the v8 SHO or would it just be redundant and not really have much effect?

the only way I can see doin a TT setup is either dual remote mounts, or my buddy met a guy in AZ that had one where teh battery was and the second at the lower front side of the radiator (i'm guessin in place of the AC). Pics never materialized so I can't prove nothin. I know he wouldn't lie to me...but a picture is worth a thousand words.

anyone else have ideas?

hmm, well I'd believe that someone had done it before, sounds like it was a **** of a lot of work.

I was a little curious about all this because i have a friend who has an acura RSX with a very small turbo charger, and it'd be fun to at least give him a run for his money in a taurus (I don't think he knows what a SHO is, he just races other little coupes).

I had another friend with a v6 camero, and he sat in the passenger seat of the car, looks over at the speedometer and says "what the **** does your speedometer go to 150 for? This car can barely get above 100."

I said "I don't know, I guess ford people are just stupid."

about 10 minutes later we're out on the highway, and i just push in on the gas lightly, we keep going faster and faster, finally i just punch it all the way at about 105-110, and we ended up going 133 - I asked him if he wanted to keep going but he said no :<

- and that was a little off topic..... but SHO's are fun, i don't care too much about increasing the top speed, since I don't go above 100 very much at all, I'd just like to speed up the time it takes to get to 100....

Do you have a big aux tranny cooler to keep temps down when you do your 100+ runs? It will help out alot in the summer months too.:)

no, but i don't drive it much in the summer, mostly in the fall when it's about 50-60 outside, although this winter it's been warm enough that i've been doing a few runs like that...was 58 yesterday, very nice day for a drive :p

I didn't realize how much better the acceleration was on the SHO if it is in drive instead of overdrive, i never really push the car hard much, like i'll drive it fast but I don't go for acceleration, i just slowly push up to a high speed and i always have the car in overdrive. So a few months ago I put it in drive and wow it was like a totally different car.

I was wondering why a car that is supposed to be so fast had such mediocre acceleration below 80.....
