I'm trying to get the AC lines disconnected from the firewall on the '96. Apparently the cheap plastic disconnect tools from AutoZone aren't up to the job. Any one have any tips or tricks?

I had to cut one of my plastic disconnect tools down to get it between the fitting and the firewall. If you got the disconnect tool in there, make sure you are pushing the line on the fitting to take the tension off the spring so the disconnect tool has a place to push the spring outboard to.

I prefer the Lisle style disconnect tools:

As Scott said, pushing the lines inward, towards the firewall will help reduce tension on the garter spring, and some twisting while removing them is also usually necessary.

A lot of times, I find the need to take a set of pliers to push the disconnect tool into the spring a few times in different positions in order to free up the spring and clear up any crud that may be preventing the spring from retracting beyond the ridge on the fitting.

Ahh yes, those work good Mr. Anonymous. Is the only place you can get them is Sear's (or online) ?

My set is just like that and I believe they came from Carquest.

Plastic is easy to grind down too as I had to do when replacing my A/C lines.

Well I'll give it another go today. It soaked overnight with the crud buster.

I sprayed them down again and twisted them a bit. You could feel the lines break free then the cheapo AZ tool worked. Now to paint with POR 15. :thankyou:

Looking at the condenser on the '96 it has the spring lock couplings. Looking at the '97 it has a bolt on aluminum manifold connection.

There must have been a change in the condenser or do I have the wrong part on the '96?

I have extra hoses for the '97 style but have no condenser hook up hoses for condenser on the '96.

The '96 is different than the '97. Both my '97s had/have bolt-on connections at the condensor, and I remember Dave Manke mentioned his 96 had spring-lock connections.
