when i bought my 89 the owner did not have a key to the trunk - he had simply used the bypass on the driver seat - my brother pushed it down and locked it the other day and now i have no way in my trunk - is there a way without going to a locksmith to pull the bypass back up

There's a lever down inside the trunk bypass beside the driver's seat; you have to take off the cover to get to it. Use a flathead screwdriver, stick it in the front of the box, and push toward the driver's seat. It's hard to explain, but it works quite easily when my trunk accidentally gets locked. ****, I used a butter knife last time I unlocked the trunk release lever.

When I broke the key off in my trunk lock, I went to a locksmith. He took the broken piece out, and used a blank and fabricated a new key for me. Total bill=$18

why don't you just replace the lock cylinder for the trunk? It should cost 10 dollars at autozone and take an hour of your time. An ignition, door, and trunk lock replacement on my 80 T/A took 2 hours.

You can use the numberpad on the door to open the trunk. Not too sure if the 89 had it or not. anyways, lock your doors then unlock with the combination, after unlocking with combination push the last number 5/6 i believe and this will open your trunk. Press the next button and it should unlock the back doors, and the next does the passenger door. then to lock press the last 2 buttons together and this will lock all doors.

The owner prior to me lost the trunk key also. I was using the key pad and the by-pass to open it. I locked the bypass one day. I used the key from my SLO wagon. It didn't fit right but I played with it for a while (push in and out and turn) and unlocked the by-pass. You can always drill out the pop rivet holding the clip in place. Pull out the lock cylinder and have it keyed, I got quoted $27 w/key included and they could do it while I watched!
