Are there any special tools required for a trans rebuild on the Gen3 cars? My new project car has a slipping transmission, so I know it needs rebuilt - I can do it unless I need hundreds of dollars of special tools to do it, in which case I'm just as well off to have a good rebuilder do it. Does it take special stuff?

I used to work at Ford. I have seen the guy there do lots of trans. I don't recall anything really special when he was doing it. Some very large snap ring pliers. One key thing is having a inch pound torque wrench. The valve body take a very very low torque and you can't do it with a foot pound torque wrench. I would buy a good one so you don't warp the valve body. You usually need a slide hammer to get the pump out too. Between that and other tool you may need I would guess you will have $150 to $200 in tools if you don't already have them.

There are a handful of tools that really make rebuilding a tranny 1000000 times easier like the clutch loading tools. Some tools can be improvised with things like coathangers and such.

Someone did a write-up of a AX4S rebuild in one of the V6 sections where they detailed which tools really were must-haves and which ones weren't. Try giving that a search.
