I am going to but my first SHO and it has a blown tranny. When replacing the transmssion do you have to take out the whole engine or can you just drop the tranny?

How much are you buying the car for? If its over $1,000. DO NOT BUY IT. Well you can buy it if you want to, but it wouldn't be worth it.

But about the question, you can just drop the tranny and leave the motor in.

You can pull the tranny out the driver's side wheel well or hold the engine up and drop the subframe then the tranny.

Bob

Edit. Works only for the MTX through the driver's wheel well. For ATX you will have to drop the subframe while supporting the engine.

Only $900 and it's only got 60,000 on it. It's in great condition. Thanks for the help, I was told the whole engine would have to come out but i found that hard to belive.

All of the MTXs, for the most part, are the same (89-95).

And keep the old blown tranny.

I had a 92 with a blown diff, and the easiest way ( trust me) is to do in this order:

Brace the motor so it takes the weight off the subrame/motor mounts
Split the tranny from the car/engine
Drop the subframe
Re attach the tranny to the motor ( no subframe yet)
Put the subframe back up

It probably wouldnt be a bad idea to check : Motor mounts, sub frame bushings, any leaks from motor/power steering, and while you are at it it looks cool if you paint your sub frame.

Ill post some pics

Consider the following:

• pull the entire driveline through the top
• Replace the connecting rod bearings while it's out
• replace rear main / clutch
• install new trans & drop back in.

Doing it this way, you save the money for an alignment, as the subframe stays with the chassis. You also have a lot more room to work outside of the car, and are less likely to pinch a part of the wiring harness, or have the trans fall on your head while working underneath. :)

You also get the opportunity to do other recommended preventative maintenance all at one shot.
