Hey, can anyone tell me what to do here? I have a blown tranny in my 90 SHO. I found a used 5-speed for 399.00+50.0 core charge at an auto store. I have the cable shift in my 90 as is. The problem is the tranny for sale is a rod shift tranny. The lady said the two trannys are compatable, but she didn't know how to make it work right. So I'm asking if this is possible without spending a lot of money or going to a junk yard, because I doubt I'll find a SHO in one. Can I stay with my cable shift without going to rod conversion and just fabricate somehow..? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Doug

It is an easy switch. But I think if you post in the classifieds. Wanting to buy a used MTX. You will get more replys than you can shake a stick at. And most likely for much less money.

Ok, maybe I'll have to post in the WTB section for a cheaper tranny. This auto store is close by, so it makes it more convenient for me.
But, I would still like to know what it takes to switch the two around.

The transmission cases are identical. You will have to take the cable brackets off your current trans for it to work on the new one. The price isn't too bad I don't guess, especially considering there won't have any freight charges involved. Be wary though, you could be buying a trans that's ready to blow and they may not even know it. The only real way to make sure is to open it up which is the prudent thing to do anyway before putting a trans you know nothing about in your car.

She said it was tested before removal and ran through all gears. That doesn't say much, but I can safely be sure that the sychros/rings are probably good, huh?
Well I don't know what I'm getting into when opening up the tranny but I'm sure I can take it apart and look the diff pins over, that is what I figure I should be peeking at.. Never taken one apart, but I'm sure it isn't that complicated. Any other things to look for during this time? Is there a way to tell if blocking rings or sychros are bad just by looking, or no? Any links you know of now that I'm on it might help me later on.

I do not recommend you take your transmission apart. And if you must. Take your bad one apart first and make sure that it is something you want to fool with.

Is my other tranny done for? I had the tranny lock up after driving on the highway and noticed a big loss of power, it came to a dead stop after I slowed to 10 mph. I then had it towed to my house, started it up a few weeks later and drove it through 1st and 2nd with the same power loss and tranny fluid leaking while driving. Is the tranny I have still fixable by just replacing the whole diff? I'd probably just throw in the used one hoping for miles and miles of fun.
