Well I was having problems once I got my 91 back together, no 5th or reverse.

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=77175

So I tore back into it and have the transmission out and the only thing out of place seems to be the C-clip for the 5th / Reverse Relay was stuck to the tranny magnet. I tried putting it back on and it's too big and just falls off

Well the top pic shows the 5th / Reverse Relay level and the clip that belong to it and the other shows the other side of the gears. I have all the cups and those little circle plates that sit on top of the cups in the top part of the trans. But to me it looks like everything is exactly as it should be... Could that C-clip honestly cause me to not have a working 5th and Reverse, I seriously hope thats the problem.

Unknown, but I would suggest bolting the case back together in the normal fashion, but without sealer, - install the shift fork interlock bolt, all the balls and springs, the reverse idler bolt, etc.

Set the trans upright on the bench, let the shift rod hang over the edge of the bench. Put the clutch disc on the input shaft so you have some leverage to turn the input shaft.

You can dry shift these trannys pretty effectively using an 1/8" drift punch through the hole in the shift rod. Make sure you can hit all the gears, 5th and especially reverse require a lot of effort to engage, you may want to get someone to steady the case while you spin the disc and work the shift rod. While turning the clutch disc, make sure the diff turns the right direction, and that you can see the effects of the gear ratios. The disc turning effort will increase and you go from 1st to 5th.

Remember, push-pull for the shift pattern is reversed when you're working the shift rod directly.

Get to the center of the gate in Neutral, then:
1st is counter-clockwise and pull.
2nd is counter-clockwise and push.
3rd is center and pull.
4th is center and push.
5th is clockwise and pull.
Reverse is clockwise and push.

Did you get my email?

Do I have to turn the input shaft while trying to shift or could I place it in 5th and give it a spin and check to see if the diff is spinning?

Also Bizzy ty for the offer, but I pulled apart a spare junk trans I got and pulled the pin off that.

Also I just went and did a little mockup like what would happen if that clip wasn't there, I'll post up some pics in a few min here, but I think thats what caused this.

S4020207

You can see on the left side I moved the arm out to the very end of the pin that it pivots on as I assume this would happen with no clip there. And if it was setup like that, the piece that sticks into the 5th / Reverse Relay no longer really does, so it probably wouldn't work, especially if that arm was allowed to move out slightly more, then it definantly wouldn't.

Well, I didn't feel like finding the gears with a punch and hoping that was the right one, since I had the tranny open I just manually placed it in 5th, put a few case bolts in and the 3 other outside bolts and tossed a clutch on and it spun the diff. Did the same for reverse and it worked too. I think the C-clip was the issue, tomorrow I'm going to give it a check over and maybe toss it back in the car.

Thank you Gary for all the help, and Bizzy for the offer on the clip :thumb: Also Gary I got your email :hail:

jebus, the manual transmission is more intimidating that the auto in my opinion, i'd rather do another auto than a manual.

I've never looked at an auto, but after watching the shonut vid once I can tear down the MTX trans in prob less than 15min, so it really isn't too bad. Just unlucky that that clip didn't fit, it wasn't bent or anything, just like it was too big
