It looks like with the driver side suspension out of the way, the tranny could possibly come out the side? Or am I looking at it wrong? If the mount is removed, the tranny slid off the input shaft, and tipped the right direction would it fit thru the hole there? Or does the subframe just absolutley need to be dropped? I don't have an engine support thing made or whatever, just a hoist so I can't really pick up the car and the motor at the same time ya know? Also how heavy are they? 80 LBS or so? Maybe 60?

I estimate the transmission is around 90 lbs and the subframe around 120 lbs. It is not difficult to lower the subframe. The car should be supported on HD jack stands on the frame rails behind the rear subframe bushings. You can use your hoist to support the engine.

Well, so I'm assuming I would just need it up high enough (the car) to be able to fit me and the tranny out the bottom then? maybe 2 foot off the ground in the front or so? I got some 5 ton stands I could use. At least it would give me a chance to coat my subframe, replace the steering rack.. and uhh... i dunno.. im sure there's something else I could do too.. :)

I put the rear of my 89 on some ramps & put some jack stands on the framerails in the front. And I supported the engine with some wood 4x4s that I screwed together... that way I have full access to the bottom part of the engine area. It makes it way easier to work than with a cherry picker.

I don't know why everyone likes to drop the subframe to remove a tranny. Its so much easier just lifting the tranny together with the engine and seperating them when its out of the car. then putting them back together and dropping it back in the car and mounting it up.

I just took a manual tranny out yesterday, from start to tranny disconnected, 1 1/4 hours. 1/4 of the hour fighting with the stuck y-pipe bolts. No messing with subframes. No messing with jacks, except quickly jacking the two sides of the car to move the wheel bearing out of the way to pop the cv axle off, which you would have to do anyways. This was my first time taking an engine out of a car, and it was easy.

Also I was at a junkyard, so wires and hoses, I just cut off. If it was my car and I didn't want to break anything in my way, I predict would of taken me 3 hours.

Well, considering I've had it in and out a few times in the past few months, I'd rather go the other route. Get tired of taking my intake off, I've already scratched it once.. :( anyway, I'm thinking of just dropping the whole thing, coating it, getting a new PS rack, just for fun while its there, and all new parts upfront. Considering coil overs too, what the ****, if I gotta tear into this thing again, I would rather it be for the last time.

I pulled the whole engine out twice & I prefer to drop the subframe. That way I dont have to disconect all the engine cooling lines, electrical connections, etc. I guess everyone has their own way of doing things.

I'd take it out the bottom as well. It was a real pain to get it back in but it wasn't as bad as taking out the entire engine, in my opinion. I can't remember how low we had to get the subframe to get it out but if I were you when reinstalling it I would get a jack and a block of wood to help support the weight.
