Will _ANY_ AXOD-E or AX4N tranny work, or does it have to be from a SHO?

Was under the assumption that they were all the same, but wanted to check before I bought one to rebuild with the shiftkit and all.

I don't know about the automatic's but the standards, they are a unique transaxle housing. Internals are a beefed up ******, but the case is SHO only and getting very rare and expensive to find. So I'm assuming that the auto SHO would also have a special tranny, but I can't say for sure

I assume you have a 93-95 ATX? I haven't done it, but I assume any AXODE/AX4S from a Taurus, Sable or Continental will bolt up to a SHO. Are they different? Definately! The SHO Tranny has a different Sun Shell and clutch packs with more plates. Numerous other internal differences also.

Here's what I did. Got a 94-95 factory rebuilt SHO tranny from the dealer for $1500 and put in the Shift kit. Check out the how-to article http://www.shoforum.com/shiftkit.htm Some of the pics are a little dark - I need more light in my garage.

See, I don't want to spend $1500. I could get a boneyard tranny and have it rebuilt with a shift kit quite well, for less money.

I'm just curious if I need to find the ATX from a SHO, since the ATX in Taurii/Sables are the same designation transmission.

I'd have thought if they were really different, they'd have given it a different designation.

Externally they are the same and share the AXODE/AX4S designation. Internally there are many differences and the tranny has a long list of different model numbers for different applications. Only 2 models are for the SHO.

Bottom line - You may be able to find a cheap one out of a Sable that will bolt up, but it won't last long behind the Yamaha engine.

Get a SHO tranny. BTW, the factory rebuilt comes with a 2 yr warranty including labor.

A word to the wise:

If you are going to get a SHO tranny, spend the extra bucks and get a Jasper. They come modified, and they also offer a 3 year/75,000 mile warranty...

Just my 2 cents worth...
