Does anyone have experience with the passenger side cv axle or halfshaft wearing out? It's the part that goes into the side of the trans case. I seem to have some movement that it shouldn't have.. If I take a prybar and pry up on the cv axle towards the case, it moves about 1/2 inch. I can feel it sometimes when I hit bumps in the road at slower speeds or when turning slow and hitting a bump. I was told it is most likely carrier bearings which are inside the trans. I need to know because I'll be rebuilding my tranny soon and don't want to put it back in with the axle screwed up like that. It's a '93 ATX. Thanks guys.

With the axle in the transmission, it should not move up and down. #1 the seal should be leaking like no other, if the axle moves that much. #2 your differential bearings have got to be shot. I don't know about moving the axle around with a pry bar. When the diff bearings are shot, you can move the axle around by hand. But 1/2 inch is alot of movement.

Good luck.

well it may not be 1/2 inch, but it moves noticeably and it seems like it's moving alot because it's heavy. But I am not leaking any fluid at all..That's what puzzles me. Could it be that the bearings inside the trans case are shot but the seal is still okay? When i'm really torqueing on the motor and let off the gas I can feel the movement in the front end. It feels almost like a bad motor mount but the movement is in the driveshaft. When I'm at a dead stop and hit the gas I can feel the axle move a bit before the car moves.

Hard to believe that it would.... The seal simply should not be expected to have that much flexibility.

However, if the shaft moves but it doesn't leak, I guess yours shows it's possible.

If you're rebuilding soon, look back over my posts regarding my ATX rebuild
to try to avoid a few things I could have done better the first time.
