tranny gring 92 mtx

I have a 92 mtx and when the car is cold shifting from first to second gear grinds.after the car has been driven about five minutes it quits and acts fine.What should i do thanks in advanced.Eric Kennard 92 mtx sho

it sounds to me like you have a bad second gear syncro. without going through all the expense and trouble of changing the tranny or changing the syncro in it, you can add synthetic fluid to it. that should help it, if not take care of it completely. mobile 1 or redline would be a good choice. another thing you might want to check is your clutch cable adjustment. if there is any play in it, you can adjust it by the adjuster just above the clutch pedal. also see if you can pull the pedal back anymore, it should click into place if it can go back more.

I was told that the clutch on the MTX was hydraulically driven and that no adjustments could be made. My clutch has to be on the floor or else it will grind. How do you adjust and where do I drain and fill the MTX fluid again??

Jeff, the clutch on every SHO is cable driven. To take the slack out of the cable, just grap the clutch pedal and pull it up. If you hear any clicking there was slack in the cable.

to drain the fluid see if your sho has a drain plug on the bottom of the tranny, it should be towards the front. some say they didn't come with them from the factory and had to be installed, but every sho i've seen has had one. to fill it up there is a plug on top of the tranny underneath the throttle body. it is hard to see with all of the cables and wiring and all that, but it's there. you will need some sort of funnel with a very small end on it, or you can do like i did and cut the bottom off an old gear **** bottle and use it for a funnel.

No SHO mtx transmissions were produced with drain plugs. There is a bolt on the bottom front of the transmission that can seem to be a drain plug, but I've been told that if you pull that plug and the gear shift gets moved before you reinstall it, you will be in a world of hurt!

a drill pump works very well to.... just set it up....put the trigger lock on the drill...and have a beer....

First thing is check the fluid level. Open the fill plug and stick your finger in there. If it's low, top it off. Or, just flush and n full the whole tranny w/ fresh organic ATF fluid and see what happens. If it still grinds, then you have no choice but to replace the synchro blocking rings. One of those $30 part items that's $800+ in labor to install
