So right before I left for work (45min drive grr.) I turned off my traction control and decided to get lower Gas mpg.( ) for some reason it seem to pull harder. It the traction control system more of a torque management system or something like that. I'm not up on this at all this is the first car I have ever owned ( always had trucks, traction control was 4wd lol). Any light on the subject would be sweet!

Traction control is capable of two things - cutting power and applying braking. In my experience, it is quite apparent when it engages and it will not engage unless there is a pretty severe loss of traction. There is a grinding sound like when antilock brakes engage and/or there is a drastic cut in power. From the manual:

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION The traction control system helps avoid drive wheel spin and loss of traction. If your vehicle begins to slide, the system applies the brakes to individual wheels and, when needed, reduces engine power at the same time. If the wheels spin when accelerating on slippery or loose surfaces, the system reduces engine power in order to increase traction. USING TRACTION CONTROL Note: If your vehicle is equipped with MyKey®, it is possible to prevent turning the traction control system off. See the MyKey chapter. In certain situations (for example, stuck in snow or mud), turning the traction control off may be beneficial as this allows the wheels to spin with full engine power. Turn the traction control system off by pressing the stability control button located in the access door under the climate controls on Taurus SHO models, or through the information display on other models.

@SHOdded you better watch out! Bruce is looking to take both of our jobs! :D

To further what Bruce said, basically the traction control and TQ MGT systems are constantly fighting you to keep majority control of the car. They will step in at times very abruptly to save you from yourself when it deems it necessary. Now that does not mean that you are driving like a maniac, but the Body Control Module (BCM) is extremely conservative when it reads roll, pitch, tilt or yaw. It will send an,"OH..." message and the ECM modulates or flat out shuts the TB cutting power. This is why your car feels "stronger". There is just less interference with your requests to accelerate.

Thanks, Sholxgt. Among the tune-only SHOs, my MKS is about mid-pack or maybe a little better. That damn ShonUup set the bar very high. :) I have never added a CAI, suspension mods or exhaust mods because I want to maintain the "quiet luxury" and nice ride that the car had when stock.

I started out with an SCT device from Livernois and their stage 2 tune. First time I experienced that reminded me of the first time I shot a 12 gauge shotgun when I was about 11 years old - made my eyes bug out! I quickly installed stage 4 and it was even better. Later I upgraded to the MyCal and stages 4+ and now 4+X. Each revision is a little better than the last. If not for my Livernois tunes, I would have gotten bored with the car a long time ago. With the tune, I look forward to driving it every chance I get as well as going to the track several times during the summer.

I am expecting this to be the last year with the MKS. I am undecided whether to replace it with a 3.0 MKZ, a 3.0 Continental or whether to go in a totally different direction.
