TPMS sensor

I'll be putting on a dedicated set of wheels for the winter. Anyone buy a set of the sensors to put on another set of wheels?

Mine is going inside for the "winter". But I am looking for another set of wheels. I havent looked all that much but what I do see from the aftermarket is pretty hideous.

Although, I was at a shop the other day where they were fixing a flex wheel and TPMS, the clamp alone (might have been a whole box) was 40.00.

Kirk, I was googling it and only found the mounting kit, about $30 for two. I'll check with my buddy in parts and see how much it'll be. Looks like it'll be a big hassle too because the new sensors have to be registered in the computer. I'll probably end up living with the light on, but I at least want to check into it.

WHat he had was a tube about 5 feet long, and was saying something about 40 bucks for a F&^*)ng "hose clamp"

Im pretty sure that your dealer will program the "new" sensors for free, atleast I would hope so. I know my dealer will if this is required.

Where is NY are you? Ive been thinking of Heading to Lebanon Valley for a test and tune. It would be cool to get two of these together at the same place..

When I worked at goodyear a few years ago we would transfer the sensors from your old wheels to the new ones if they were the type that bolted in at the valve stem. The only time we would not mess with it was if they were strapped to the center of the wheel.

I do all the TPMS installs at my shop. The band ones are basically all Fords, and they do suck. And the bands are nearly $40 too, and thats each. There is nothing really to transferring the sensors over. The factory band is clamped like a CV boot and is not reusable. It must be cut off and a new band is slid thru the stock sensor. It is a hassle, trust me but care must be taken when installing them and it's straight forward. I can see why some places wouldnt want to install them. The GM/Chevy ones are the most user friendly but you still have to use special valve stems that bolt to the sensor. But, that way you can transfer the sensor to different wheels and there not be a problem. The only way I could see Ford having to re-adjust the TPMS is if you had to go and buy all new ones. Or, like in the SUper Duty's, you drop down to a different PSI than the stock tires call for. I.E: 80 psi to a 50 psi tire.

Hey Kirk, I'm on the other side of the state, just south of Buffalo.

I found a kit at American Muscle that has everything for new wheels, including the tool to reprogram the SJB with the new sensors for $150. Here's the link:

I just don't know how aftermarket stuff is and this application is actually for a Mustang. I'll email the link to my buddy in parts and talk to him tomorrow. I'll let you know how I make out.

SHO U UP, I looked at the Stack Racing kit (at American Muscle) for a '10 Mustang and it's got the valve mounted sensors. The '10 SHO owner's manual has a picture with the banded sensor. I'm wondering if that's just an old picture and they actually use a valve mounted sensor on the SHO also. Don't know if you can help me here, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I emailed an engineer with Team Mustang at Ford that I know. Don't know if he can help me either. The '08 Mustang kit is $150 while the '10 kit is $300 :banghd:

I heard back from my buddy at Team Mustang. He could only tell me that the band mounted and valve mounted systems are not compatible. I guess now I just need to verify which system is on the '10 SHO. I can do that tomorrow.

It would be awesome if they use a valve mounted sensor. Let me know what you find out. I have my fingers crossed.

i have run that track many times. It is only about 45 min from my house. If you guys go out there to run shoot me a pm I would love to meet up with you guys out there. If there is enough notice I will get the turbo car going again.

Kirk, Alex... I'd be willing to head out there to the track. But not to run. I don't even have 200 miles on mine yet, I just got it Wednesday. Besides, I'm not much of a straight line racer, I'm more of a road course guy. I can't make it out on the 17th though, I got the Bluebloods picnic in Hemlock, NY... that's about 60 miles south of Rochester. Is that track in Leichester? That's an IHRA track.

SHO U UP... I'm actually hoping it's a band sensor. That kit is $150. The valve mounted kit is $300. The Stack Racing band sensor kit uses a radiator hose type band though, with a screw. Not the permanent, single use one. I figure on using the red Lock Tite on it and hope it doesn't loosen. I'll find out tomorrow which it is and post my findings. I'll get prices on the Ford stuff too.

OK, this is what I've found out. The '10 SHO has the band mounted TPMS sensors. I called American Muscle and asked if it is possible to check to see if the sensor would work without mounting a tire on the wheel or mounting the sensor on the wheel. They couldn't verify if it would actually work. Once the sensor has been mounted, the kit would NOT be returnable. Also, this TPMS kit is for a Mustang. I doubt though the SJB would be different on a Taurus. One thing I know for sure, you can't switch between band mounted sensors and valve mounted sensors. Calling Ford to get some technical information on the TPMS probably is an impossibility. Check this out, I went on the Stack Racing website, they make the kit. They charge $12.25 for a technical question via email! So I think I've covered my bases here as best as I can. Bottom line now is this is going to be a $150 experiment... all this just to keep that light on the dash from coming on!

Oh, I forgot to mention the list prices for this stuff from Ford. The sensor is $86 and the band is $55, each. I didn't get the price for the programming tool.

This is encouraging... I just got another email from my buddy from Team Mustang at Ford. All TPMS band mounted sensors are compatible. The '11 SHO will come with valve mounted sensors. The '10 Mustang already does.

Still some more information. I got a part number for a genuine Ford kit, but it is for a 20" wheel. It is a 4 pack TPMS accessory kit which retails for $328.57. The part number is 8T4Z-1A189-A. You probably need a tool to install the band and a programmer.

So, all you need to do is buy a band for each wheel then, right? That's not too big a deal now. Least I don't think so. Wonder what other little changes the 2011 SHO will have. :swing:
