This weekend the car was acting funny. At first I thought the torque convertor was to blame but now I'm not so sure.
When crusing at a steady speed and when encountering a hill (even a slight hill) the car seems to surge as if the torque convertor is locking and unlocking rapidly. I sometimes also get a slight bucking as if the torque convertor is slipping. The problem also occurs when accelerating with a light to medium throttle. It's as if the car doesn't know whether it wants the torque convertor locked or not. If I mash the pedal while it's doing it the problem goes away.
I wouldn't be suprised that the torque convertor is on its way out however there are some other signs that point that there may be another source of the problem. Last night when coming home I thought I'd try throwing the car into neutral when it was doing the bucking thing (is that a smart thing to do at 55 mph??). When I did this the car reved up and bounced off the rev limiter till I thought wholly ***** and I threw it back into drive (it wasn't pretty). Needless to say, I didn't try that again. I think I'll wait till I'm closer to home before I try that one again.
Finally, when I got to home and I was dropping off the girlfriend at her place, I put the car in park and watched the idle go from 800 rpm up to 1200 and cycle back and forth. I shut it off for a couple minutes and restarted it to leave and the idle returned to normal.
I'm thinking the problem could be a couple of things: a torque convertor on the way out combined with a bad coil causing the computer to go haywire coupled with some electrical gremlins. Could also throw in some sensor problems (TPS?).
Do any of these symptoms sound familar?
