So I was reading about TQs for my 96. And near as I could tell, it seemed that the 96 SHOs shared the same TQ as the 94 and 95 SHOs. I was wondering if that was actually true.

Cause really, I would like something like a 3500 to 3700 RPM stall converter for my Gen III. I can't for the life of me figure out why ford would put a converter that stalled at 2200 RPMs on a motor where the peak TQ was at nearly 5K and peak HP was 6K+. It is just illogical. And it ****** me off, but I digress.

Anywho, after having to have the tranny rebuilt in my OBS PSD, and having a new converter put in it too, it makes me want one for the SHO. I went from a 1200 stall in the PSD to a 1800 flash stall, and the difference it makes is unreal. The only way to describe it is wild.

So, if I can put a Gen II converter in my Gen III, who should I buy one from? I don't even know where to look, although I will go peruse the SHOSource site. And while it is apart, the tranny should probably be freshened up too. Anyone make good guts, and a nice shift kit for the AX4N?

In a perfect world, I would buy the last NESHO 5 speed kit. Maybe should anyway....

When I put an Eaton M90 on one of my 96 SHO's, the stock tranny lasted 160 miles

I knew that was going to happen, had a spare built trans with Windstar gearset in it already - 3.98 vs stock 3.77 ratio - and a built torque converter.

Torque converter was made by Fred at Midwest Torque Converters out of the Rockford, Illinois area. Cost me over $500.00 for the work on the converter but it is absolutely bulletproof.

Also, for identification - look down the center hole of the converter where the splined shaft locks in. you will see 4 notches in the Gen 3 SHO converter, 2 in non-SHO converters.

I have a spare Eaton M90 laying around. Want to help me install it? I'm only half joking.

It would be nice to have a new tranny, with lower gears, and an awesome converter. A buddies dad does it for a living, and said he would build me a bullet proof one for 3000. I only paid 2200 for the whole car, so when it goes, that may be it. It has 180,*** on it, so it probably isn't even worth fixing, or dropping that kind of money into.

I was just mostly curious if it was true that a Gen II converter would work in my Gen III. I would love a 3500 stall converter. I would also love a 5 speed. Maybe I need to pester NESHO more....

The $3000.00 for the worked over transmission sounds like a good deal to me. Especially when you are comparing it to performing a MTX swap. You are remembering the 5-speed with too much affection. Even when new, they were not a silky smooth unit.
It is worth fixing, and it is worth dropping the money into. That is only one-half year of a new car payment.

The 5 speed in the Wagon I own is amazing. I love it. If I could have one like that in the V8, I would be a happy clam. I don't know if all the 5 speeds are geared like the Wagon, but the 1-2 shift in it is amazing. I love how close it is geared. I can't imagine it wouldn't be a huge performance upgrade.

I am not an expert, but I would think even with a built auto and a 3500 or so stall converter, that the 5 speed should still out perform it.

As for the new car payment thing, I don't know what that is like. I have never had a car payment. Ever. I just save up and buy what I want. I do know the last time I spoke to the gentleman at NESHO, he said if I brought the car there, and gave him 5k, I could drive it away with a 5 speed in it. He'd even do a tune on it for me too.

My problem is I have too many vehicles and am spread too thin. I need to downsize.
