Does anyone have a link or know of, where to get a new convertor? I have tried some of the fordpartsonline sites, and it doesn't come up as an avail part. It was suggested to me to get this when I pull the engine from this car I'm getting. It has a bit over 100k miles on it. Apparently, they have been problems with some, as I'm told.
Thanks

are you doing the work yourself?
if not, you might as well have the tranny re-built because to replace the TC you need to pull apart the entire animal.
i say this because i had a shuddering TC at 80K. so i went to a re-build specialist for a fix. i was ignorant in thinking that he would replace only the TC.
in order to provide any type of warranty he had to replace all necessary parts, install a Trans-Go kit (valve body re-build), and a new TC.
cost was $2200.
if doing yourself, you should still do the trans-go kit.

I had a ford rebuild of my tranny at around 72k(using the kit, not a remanned unit), it was under my aftermarket warranty, so it was at the warranty company's discretion. I now have around 98k, and 18 months later, the TC is ******** the bed again, along with 1st and 2nd gear. I'm opting for a new FPS tranny since I am sinking my own money into this one and my warranty company can get bent.

The labor involved with the rebuild kit brought the total to around $4200. The kit retails for $1991 or something and I looked at a reman AX4Ns in the price list today and it was $2701.38 :/

Either way I would throw the shift kit in with the new converter, while you have everything out of the car.

Thanks for the feedback.
The engine and trans will be out of the car. Cam sprocket let go. I am pulling to determine rebuild or find another engine. So the engine can be seperated from trans. I don't want to sink a ton of money into this, such as the whole tranny kit or reman. Just the basics. IF the convertor is sure to go, I might as well do it.

BTW....I will be doing the work myself.
Still, where to get the convertor? Is the trans-go kit, the one above for $1991? or something different?

Thanks

I sent my TC to Tennessee and had it rebuilt for $350 or so. They cut the old one open and rebrazed all the fins plus put a better clutch and bushing in.

Went through www.bulkparts.com

If you do an internet search you will find a lot of places that will do it. Most are over $400 though. You know how good the Ford ones are and they are close to $300 IIRC. I've beat on mine for over three years now. Even went two years which included a round trip to CA with the TC not locking up due to PCM issues.

Works like a charm still.

Cost me almost that much to have mine split (cut in half on a lathe) and get all the blades brazed at Bear TorqueConverter here in Ft. Smith. After he cut it in half, he had me come down and lay witness to how loose they were. Sounded like window-blinds in the breeze.

Its on the Makco distibuting website, check it out. It says all torque converters are rebuilt. The FWD AX4N converter applications are listed at the the same price-$157.50

If getting a new TC make sure the internal fins are all brazed into place.

What about a new unit from Ford? I think it's like $250 or so...

Here is a good tight shot of the blades on the fins inside a stock AX4N torque converter. Note that the concaved ring has the tabs of the impellar-blades just "folded" and maybe if it has been pulled apart the rebuilder may hit the end of the balde with a hammer and a punch to "freshen" the locking, but even though that was done to mine, it still sounded like a bunch of marbles inside a coffee can when I pulled it out.

You don't want a new one from Ford. They are the problem not the solution.

Maybe the turbine blades can be loose? Yes? No?

No, they should not loose as this creates a wear area where the blades start pivoting under the load of acceleration and deceleration. The material that is worn off ends up building up enough creating a "sludge" in the fluid that can be fine enough to make several passes through the filter before becomming thick enough to be trapped but by then it can make the fluid thick enough that it no longer disappates the heat which in turn will lead to heat related failures in several other components inside the transmission. In the worst case senario the blade simply breaks off from the pivoting which really doesn't do the inside of the TC much good either.
