I need the valve adjustmet tools to finish the top 60 K.
Are they available from local auto parts stores?
Has anyone rented/borrowed them out from Autozone?
Should I get a set/kit of shims ahead of time?
Order only what I need after taking measurements?
Don't adjust the valves at all?
The car runs well, no valve noise at all.
The Sho was owned and driven by a senior citizen, prior to me getting it.
I doubt the tach pointer spent much time on the right hand side of the guage.

Do you have any other reason to check the valves other than the miles? I tend to not want to disturb something that doesn't have issues. However, if you have a leaky cam cover seal, or oil in the plug wells, then you may want to attack it. If you do have a leaky seal, you should check the gaps with a set of feeler gauges. The best way to get the tools is to borrow or rent them from a fellow SHO owner.

In short. If the car runs well, don't touch it.

If you are already pulling the valve covers off, at least use a feeler gauge to check the clearances. If you need to change anything, pm me and we can arrange for you to 'borrow' the tools.

We have the tools and shim kits here: SHO Source

It is just best if you order ahead of time, unless you have the car apart for a week or if you like taking it apart twice.

When I first got the car I went to check the front plugs, the spark plug wells were full of oil.
Then I accidently pulled off the boot from one of the spark plug wires.
So I had to buy a set of wires, to replace the one I broke.
I got the cam seals and well plugs too, just procrastinating as other more serious issues come up, like the front 60K.
(The car was running very poorly and stalling at idle.)
The only side effect I notice with the top 60K being due, is the smell of oil during the hot season , especially if I drive it hard.

The car had a top 60K done at a Ford dearership @ 89K about nine years ago.
The car has 155K on it now.

Typically, they don't run very well when the plug wells are full of oil, because the spark can short out through the oil and not fire the plugs or weaken the spark. I expect it will run even better after you do the top 60k.

In the interim, you can suck the oil out of the wells and dry them out. The common tool for the job is the pump or sprayer from a soap bottle or windex bottle.

You can do this until you get around to the seals, plugs, and wires.
