Before replacing anything, you should perform (or have done) a thorough mechanical inspection.

Tie rods
Tie rod ends
Ball joints
Wheel bearings
Subframe bushings
Steering column
Steering rack

Each of these must be checked/inspected. Once you know what is wrong, you can start replacing the worn/defective parts.

Instructions and tips for checking each of these are available in a search of past forum posts or in a mechanic's reference manual.

If you have VAPS, it is supposed to do that.

For what it's worth, I've had a problem with mine where the steering suddenly gets VERY stiff, from one second to the next, at constant speed. The power steering cuts out completely. I bet that's what Calisho94 is talking about. I can fight it as long as it's there, then it goes away in about 10 seconds. If I was a 5th percintile sized Asian woman, I'd be concerned for my safety. Luckily I'm not. Someone once told me that it's a the fault of the stepper motor that controls the degree of assist. It happens infrequently enough that other problems have been more pressing, and I haven't pursued it yet.
