I want to get a set of Dunlop SP5000's. Has anybody had any experience with these?

Dont get them. They suck as any type of performance tire. Just my humble opinion.

I highly recommmend Bridgestone RE730s for haul ass performance, wet road stick, long, even wear and a fair price from Tire Rack. The way they performed during the LSSHOC Fall Run around the Texas Hill Country roads was exceptional and they didn't even show the abuse.

I have had three (3) sets of Dunlop SP5000;

215/60-16 on the slicers,
225/55-16 on the 7.0" rims and now
245/45-17 on the 8.0" rims.

I really like them, especially in the wet. They lose very little of their capabilities in the wet compared to the dry. Check out the comparison info/data and track testing results for them at TireRack.com

Okay so it's true they are not the absolute best in the dry, if you want that you could go with g-Force KD's or AVS Sports or Pilots (real big buck!), but they are moderately priced, M&S rated, (although I don't drive my SHO in the winter so I have no feed back on how well they do in the snow) not too noisy or hard riding. They have very good steering and handling feed back, are NOT scary at the limits and have a good thread wear rating as well. The rubber compound is one of the latest designs which uses silicone so that they don't harden as they age with repeated heat cycling.

I would recommend them highly.

I personally have BFG G-Force KDW meats. I have heard MANY good things about the Potenza RE730's mentioned, and were my second choice. I had Pirelli P7000 Supersports for 30 days, then Toyo Proxes for 30 days, and did street & 1 autocross each before settling on the G-Force. The Pirellis were great on the street, but too soft of a sidewall for all-out autocross. I found the Proxes were awful on both street & track. The other Dunlop I see at the autocrosses are SP8000(?).

Just out of curiousity, does everyone here have Z-rated tires? I know it's recommended, but I didn't have the funds to pull it off and i bought some AVID touring Yokahama's 215/16/60's, they are H-rated. He said it would be alright but i was wondering if you guys thought different....thanks.

I have Falken ZE502's Z-rates on my 92. The big differance, other than speed ability, is Z rated has less flex in the side wall than an V rated etc. Which makes the vehicle handle different.

Yeah, what Scott says. I had them on my 86 350-5speed Camaro, and my friend has them on is 91 Z28 and they are durable, grippy, and just an all aroud great tire!

I tried a set of the Falken Ziex (ZE-502) and returned them for a set of Yokohama AVS Intermediates. They weren't a bad tire, just much softer in reponse and overall grip than I was used to.

With a car capable of 140mph, it would be illegal in Europe to install anything less than V-rated (up to 149mph) tires on it. You should install nothing less than a V-rated tire on the SHO.

With so many options in tires, you pretty much get what you pay for. There are no cheap tires that can stand up to the high end offerings of the major brands. If you have tried the best, you would understand the difference.

I got a set of the Bridgestone Potenza S-02s as they were clearing them out at Tire Rack for $125 each. Now that was a good deal. I loved the S-02s, but I just didn't want to have to pay the $183 a tire they were asking for the Pole Position replacements.

I have the SP Sport 5000 and love em, they are absolutely fabulous in the wet. You guys are recommended high performance tires, but he lives in NY where there is snow and a high performance tire in snow means one thing=no go

Thanx for all the input on this topic. I just purchased the SHO this past June and the car came with Goodyear Regatta 2's. Yeah, I know they suck. I'm going to use them through the winter and get my Dunlop SP5000's next Spring.

Don't buy Yokohamas. They were on my car when I purchased it back in August with a fair amount of tread, but since then they have worn faster than I would have expected. I do not do burnouts, or even spin my tires in any fashion. I will occaisionally take a brisk turn, and usually I take turns at moderate speed (I enjoy my cars handling). From the day I got the car home, I felt as if the tires held the car back fmor taking turns a little quicker. To me, it feels as if the tires reach their limit before the car does (if that makes any sense). I would NOT recommend Yokohamas to anyone. I have heard good things about the Kuhmo tires though, and they are VERY fairly priced.

The Yokohama AVS Intermediates and the AVS Sports are some kick-ass, high performance tires. The Intermediates lasted me 30,000 hard driven miles. That is as long as any set that I have had on the car. They are equivalent in performance to the Dunlop SP8000. The AVS Sports are just too darn expensive for me to enjoy a set.

Been through ten sets of tires on the car,

Scott- I have the Avid V4s, is there a difference? I don't know what it is about them, but I just don't think they are that good. That is totally contrary to what I had heard up until having my own experience with them. Most people said what you say about the Yokos.

The Avids are an all season tire and have no performance pretenses. The AVS series is Yoko's max performance tires. Yes, there is a big difference.
